OT's Scientific Hurricane *** Finished ***

Post by Old_Tonto »

My entry for this group build will be this Airfix 1/72 Hurricane Mk.I (new tool). This Hurri is a Battle of Britain veteran that can be found today in the Science Museum in London.

This will be a OOB build with no messing.

I got cracking on this last night as it occoured to me that I could build it alongside the Spitfire for the Classic Airfix GB.

So I opened the box and this is what you get:

Image

I will ditch the useless paints but keep the brush & glue. I started by painting the interior parts green then stuck the wing together.
This kit is unusual in that construction starts with the wing as this forms the cockpit floor. A cunning plan from Mr. Airfix.

Before too long I got to this stage:

This is where I stopped for the evening after making a blood sacrifice to the modelling gods!

I always do this whenever I put a new blade in!
And its blooming hard to put a small plaster on one handed. :???:

I have spent most of last night filling & cleaning up the wings join which is terrible for such a new too kit. The upper wing half is smaller than the narrow compared to the lower wing so be warned. Maybe Airfix will correct this with the mettle skinned version which I am sure will make an appearance before the Battle 9f Britain anniversary.

Despite the fit issues she is just about ready for a coat of primer:

I will leave the canopy off until all the paintwork is completed. I have not had much success with canopy masking lately so I am planning to do canopies freehand from now on. :???:
We will see how that works out.

I have taken the same step recently OT. If you give them a dip in klear prior to painting it helps with removing any over-spill with a sharp cocktail stick once dry.

Over the weekend I managed to get a coat of primer on & then painted the undersides sky.

Image

So despite all the fit problems she is now beginning to look like a Hurricane.

Tonight I will mask off the underside and apply the first colour of the camouflage. At some point I need to tackle the canopy framing too. :???:

Nice work so far. The issue with the wings is a big let down for the rest of the kit. I'll be putting on the canopy prior to painting as I've got a Montex mask for it.

Cheers guys. You are right Toby but it is not a show stopper once you know about it. ;-)

Last night I got the main U\C attached & the canopy fitted. Then this morning before work I just couldn't resist testing a few decals.

Image

I am pleased to say that they behaved and with the help of a little for Microsol the roundels are settling down over the fabric wing area.
With a little luck I can get this one finished in a few days. :)

I've been meaning to ask but is the small gap at the front of the cockpit where the windscreen joins actually on the real thing or should I fill it?

The windscreen covers the slot Toby.

What he said.

I got the remaining decals on last night baring the black anti-slip panels at the wing to fuselage join. I will do a little weathering to those areas first.

I am aiming to sort the U\C wheels tonight.
