I will be building Revell's offering of a MKII C:

Image
The scheme I have chosen is No. 336 (Greek) Sqn., Desert Air Force, RAF, which was formed on 25 February 1943 at Landing Ground 219 in the Western Desert. It was mainly used for shipping protection and air defence duties off the Libyan coast.

From first viewing it seems to be quite well detailed in the cockpit and wheel well areas, with nice shallow panel lines. I reckon the worst part of this build will be following Revells paint mixing guides.

It is a scheme that I have been meaning to do for quite a while so it will be good to get it done.

I have made a start by painting up the cockpit:

I am going to be away through the middle of the month so want to get this built before I go, hence it will be built totally OOB, hopefully with no problems. :)

This is such a nice kit it is pretty much building itself. I was worried that the wing connections were a bit over engineered;

Image

But they actually fit together really well. (The wing is upside down in the picture to show the complex jointing surfaces).

With the main structure complete, and taking inspiration from Jeff's (jssel) build, I have decided to improve on the navigation lights by using some clear sprue.

Image

At this point I have removed the plastic from each wing and painted the areas in red and green as applicable.

Work on the navigation lights has continued with bits of clear sprue being superglued in place:

Then carefully sanded down using various grades of sandpaper to blend in:

This picture also shows the air intake which comes in two parts and is the only bit that required any filler to improve the seam.

Yes it will look good in the desert colours.

Nice work so far, especially on the navigation lights.

Thanks Guys. Having returned from a very nice break to Berlin, I can get on with a bit of modeling. First task was to put on a coat of blue on the underside:

Image

Once dry I will give it a coat of klear prior to masking for the upper colours.

The coat of klear that I put on went all weird and gloopy for some reason, so I had to rub it down and put on a new coat of blue.

With this done I sealed it with a coat of Gloss varnish from 'docrafts':

Image

It is the first time I have used it so it will be interesting to see how it behaves.

The new varnish sprayed quite well and dried quickly. Next I masked up the bottom and sprayed the base coat, followed by brush painting the dark earth brown on:Image
This shows it with a coat of varnish on ready for the decals which I will put on after lunch.

Calling this one finished:

The decals went on without a hitch and actually settled down better than ever before. whether this was due to the new varnish I used remains to be proven but I look forward to using it again to see how it copes.

Overall this is a great kit with no fit problems. Thanks to DazDaMan for suggesting this GB and for looking after us throughout. This is another one ticked off the to-do list. :)

Great job, love a Hurri in that scheme ( Hurris are more appealing than Spitfires :ha: ) Nice recovery from the varnish episode, will keep a look out for that
