Lancfan's Slip-Wing Hurricane. ***FINISHED***
This build will be of the slip wing hurricane using an OT mk.1a kit taken from the Airfix VC Icons set.
The sprues have been washed ready for the start.
The exhaust was cut away and slots for new exhausts were cut out, the raised line details were replaced with engraved lines.
The cockpit has been assembled OOB and painted, because the position of the upper wing would hide this area there didn't seem too much point in detailing the cockpit. The fuselage halves were then glued together.
One big flaw with this kit is the poor mainwheel bay, although I can't make it into a NT kit without sacrificing one in the attempt I can make it look less like an old tool offering.
The first stage was to cyano a piece of balsawood to the lower wing which was cut and sanded to form the curved sidewalls of the wheelbay.
This was then covered in a piece of thin plastic card to form the wheelbay roof which was in turn detailed with a length of stretched sprue in the centre and two small squares of the same thin card, not exactly kit standard but a big improvement on what was there before.
The wing/fuselage joining faces on the upper wing halves needed cutting down to clear this new wheel box before they could be fitted.
The wing was then fitted to the fuselage and is now set aside to dry before I continue.

Great idea with the balsa, David...a quick easy way of boxing in an area...
Please critique my posts honestly i.e. say what you think so I can learn and improve...

That's quick progress. I love the slip wing hurricane it's one of my favourite odd ball cunning plans that they came up with in the Second World War.

That all done it is now time to leave the kit parts for a while.

I made this model for last years Hurri GB and really enjoyed it. Great work on the wheelbay that makes a massive difference.

Re: Lancfan's Slip-Wing Hurricane.
A Tale of Two Wings-
Now was the time to carve the upper wing using the plans from the old 'Plastic Kit Constructor' magazine found online. I started work on the blank by reducing the centre section to allow for the dihedral.
I then carved and sanded away the undersides of the outer panels. I repeated the process for the upper surfaces and then sanded the aerofoil into the wings starting with the top faces.
Images Lost
I then checked the wing against photographs of the full size for any details I may need to add and- it was wrong!!! 'Plastic Kit Constructor' seems to have copied earlier drawings and depicted the upper wing as a three piece unit with pronounced dihedral, in reality it was a one piece ply-skinned wing based on the original wing and was flat on top when viewed from the front- the 'dihedral' is in fact washout.
Time for another try- this is the second blank ready to be carved to shape.
I began by shaping the upper leading edge of the centre section.
I then tapered the lower surface of the outer panels including the washout and shaped the outer leading edges.
The aft wing/trailing edges of the outer panels were carved to shape next.
Finally the centre section aft wing/trailing edge was shaped to complete the wing, the trailing edges were sealed with cyano to prevent them from warping and the wing was then sealed with DIY sanding sealer (clear dope and talcum powder) the wing is now ready to be fitted.

Re: Lancfan's Slip-Wing Hurricane.
With the upper wing complete and ready to be fitted the basic Hurricane has been built up enough to be almost ready for paint, the tailplanes have been fitted with the elevators at rest, the wing joint and gun bay covers have been filled with paint to make them stand slightly proud and the rest of the raised line details have been removed from the kit wing, the aerial posts have been moved to their new position under the fuselage, a pitot has been made from stretchd sprue and the kit radiator has been replaced with a spare unit left over from a conversion of the new tool mark one kit.

Re: Lancfan's Slip-Wing Hurricane.
You just carved a whole wing like it was nothing. And then you made another one. And they look fantastic, even the incorrect one. This is unacceptable - it makes us all look very bad. Please refrain from this sort of behaviour....
