Brickie's Polish Lightning
OK, for the first time I dip my toe into the waters of ship building. I've acquired this Mirage kit of a Polish destroyer of World War 2, ORP Błyskawica ("Lightning"). Błyskawica (bwiska-vitsa) had an excellent war record including, in one famous incident, defending the shipyard where she was built, Cowes, from a German air raid in 1943. She's now retired, the oldest preserved destroyer in the world, and tied up at Gdynia.

Any plans for a research trip?

Wherever there's danger, wherever there's trouble, wherever there's important work to be done....I'll be somewhere else building a model!

Mirage ship kits aren't bad; they make a great effort at finely detailed parts - I have built several. Problem is the thick sprue attachments place a lot of stress on those finely detailed parts. Take care when cutting them off, perhaps gently saw rather than snip/cut .... then repair.

It's my model and I'll do what I want with it.

No, sadly, we were in Poland on holiday last summer and stayed a few days in Gdansk but we didn't have a lot of time and I didn't think the missus and the nipper would appreciate being dragged away from the beach in Sopot to go look at a rusty old ship.Dazzled wrote:Any plans for a research trip?

The sprues don't actually look too bad on this one, but I will take your warning under advisement...jRatz wrote:Mirage ship kits aren't bad; they make a great effort at finely detailed parts - I have built several. Woooowwww .....
I paste three pictures ORP "Błyskawica" from 2009, and if Brickie will have nothing against it, then later a few others.
I read the memories of sailors from the "Błyskawica" - for the British name "Błyskawica" was extremely difficult to pronounce. So sometimes our ship was called simply ... "Whisky-Whiska", or "Bottle whisky" ;)
Regards!

If the kit lives up to the original, this should be a really nice build.

Er, yes.
Suddenly it's the 21st and I haven't even started yet. Better get on with it, hadn't I?

Cheers for the pics by the way. I'm determined to go back to Gdansk one day, maybe I'll get to see her next time.

Re: Brickie's Polish Lightning
Anyone know what colour the deck should be? The colour callouts in the instructions are a bit ... vague.
