Lancfan's RAN Fury ***DNF***

Post by lancfan »

I'm going to build an Airfix boxed FB.11 as an Royal Australian Navy machine from the Xtradecal sheet X72074.
May be a late starter due to work delaying my start date.

You are absolved. You'll probably be finished first anyway.

I was in Canberra last Saturday and went to the AWM to take some photos. I managed to take several of their preserved Seafury.(109). These include Wing fold, wheel wells, exhausts etc. If they will be of use I'll post them here.

David,

Hope work lets up soon. If you don't want the Airfix decals . . . ?

Dai, the preserved AWM Sea Fury pictures would be useful to us all on the Historical References page.
Toby the kit is the same and was supplied in the same PM bag, it came with brilliant decals and placement instructions.
Martin ,the decals are missing from my kit (I pinched them for another model some time ago) and I wouldn't mind another sheet myself, the Airfix boxing is now as rare as hen's teeth: can't find it on kingkit currently and I do keep looking and am hoping to find it at Telford. The job is new and with a number of people off due to illness at various sites is a catchup exercise ATM.

David,

No problem, just a cheeky question. I know the Airfix kit is like hen's teeth; that was the one I was looking for when I was finding a kit for this build. I suspect that the decals may have been the most valuable bit of the Airfix boxing. I also haven't seen a copy on any second-hand stall thus far.

Martin

Time to begin, I am starting with the fuselage and cockpit. The first job is to cut away the fuselage halves for the wheeel wells and trim down and fit the cockpit rear bulkhead in the correct position further forward than that shown in th instructions, the panel line marked in pencil is the correct position for the rear bulkhead- the fuselage halves were held up to a light and the line was transfered to the inside to mark the correct position on the cockpit floor.

A more detailed and accurate pilots seat was copied in resin from a plasticene mould and cyano'd to the cockpit floor.
Image

The cockpit interior was then built up from photographs using plastic card, balsawood, copper wire and stretched sprue.

I didn't realise the bulkhead needs moving. Thanks.

As I painted the cockpit I used the drying time to open up the wheelbays.
Image

The cockpit has been painted and the wing halves have been modified to accept the new wheelbays.
Image

The fuselage has been glued together and was left aside overnight.
Image

The next step this morning was to correct the rear upper decking, here a thin plastic card guard has been slid into a matching thin gap I left between the seat back and the rear bulkhead to protect the cockpit from the car filler I next applied into the incorrect hole behind the seat having first packed the hole with tissue to support the filler until it hardens.
Image

With the upper decking sanded down to restore the correct straight line right up the the rear of the cockpit this area can be left alone for now.

There should be a mass balance halfway up the rudder, this is lightly engraved on the fin but the rudder line ploughs staight through it, the model on the left is OOB whilst the GB model has been altered by filling the gap across the mass balance, sanding it flush and cutting a leading edge curve into said balance.
Image

The exhaust pipes are also missing from all of the PM/Pioneer2/Airfix/Revell Sea Furies, the lip at the front has been cut away and filed to shape, the nose on the left is OOB and the model on the right is the GB model.
Image

The exhaust pipes have been made from stretched sprue and attached to the nose.
Image

Moving over to the wing, the new wheelbay has been made from card, plastic strip, foil and copper wire.
Image

Dry fitted into the wing before painting it looks like this.

The wheelbay has been painted and the wing has been assembled, the trailing edges and wing tip taper have been corrected.
Image

The wing root air intake and oil cooler have been cut away to make room for scratchbuilt replacements.
