Jeff's Twotter

Post by jssel »

Gee that title almost sounds naughty.

It is here where I will be cobbling together the Modelcraft (Matchbox) DHC-6-300 Twin Otter in the colors of NorOntair. NorOntair was a regional feeder line out of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario CN connecting Sudbury, Timmons and points in the bush.

The color scheme features a Common Loon motif which was very catchy when I lived in Sault Ste Marie, MI and watched them fly overhead daily. And that bright DeHaviland yellow.

It is interesting that I don't think of the Twin Otter as an airliner. Guess I need to study what that says about me.

I was born in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, but have only vague memories of the OPAS deHavilland types.

There's a really neat airline - European Coastal Airlines - that operates a new 19-seat Twotter floatplane up and down the Croatian coast. I'm just waiting for some enterprising decal maker to release a sheet for it....

Great subject!

Really eye-catching scheme they used: http://twinotterarchive.com/334_CF-TVO_ ... 1024_a.jpg;

Should look fantastic when done.

Jim......you were born in the Soo? Wow. Airport was sure a long ways out of town. Algoma Steel really lit up the skies at night dumping slag.

Thanks for the picture VV.

One beautiful decal sheet:

So you don't get the multi-colored plastic nor the Canadian Forces markings but sprue for sprue it is the Matchbox kit so this should be a good kit to cobble together.

Oddly enough I had the same thought when I saw the title. :)

Yep, though I have almost no memory of it. My Dad worked at Algoma.

Skipping around the instruction sheet and putting together piece that have two halves. Only mod up to this point was sanding down the wing fences to a more scale appearance.

Anyone with any knowledge on a good paint for De Haviland Yellow? I thought I would start with Testors Chrome Yellow and add to it to deepen it up.

Isn't RAF trainer yellow fairly close? Xtracrylix do one.

Some more done today. Interior paint and engine nacelles (two pieces each) mounted to the wings. After the test fit of most of the pieces, this was one area that needed attention with filler and sanding. Still nothing out of the ordinary.

Clear parts added tonight after the paint sets up some more.
