Italeri Junkers Ju-86 airliner, by gnomemeansgnome

Post by gnomemeansgnome »

A late start I know. Originally thought I might attempt Revell's reboxed Matchbox Heinkel Blitz, but don't want to poach on Tim's turf. Was then thinking about the Matchbox Supermarine Stranraer in QCA markings, but I can't find the box that has the Whiskey Jack markings at the moment. Anyway I hope that Marky and I can get on with that one as a Shared Build some day. In the meantime I will attempt my first airliner model ever, the Italeri Junkers 86 in Glorious Braille scale. Watch this thread for pics soon......

I meant Marky M607, ha ha! But perhaps a three way Shared build for the Stranraer is in order at some point.

Remember after we traded the sprues we needed a year or two back that we also talked about doing a Stranraer Shared Build? You were gonna do one based at Pembroke Dock and I was gonna do a QCA one. But Andrew you should totally do it too. If I recall correctly the Whiskey Jack Decals sheet has options for at least a couple of QCA Strannies, so we can in theory do at least 3 distinct machines. Once in a lifetime thing you know, three dudes building the Whistling Outhouse at the same time. Very, very, cool.

Well, I guess that is what happens when life gets busy and in the way. My QCA Stranny has been on the back burner for a while, pending me getting my you know what together. Maybe later this year, perhaps?

Yep, sounds like a plan! (again!). Let me know when you have spare building space etc, I should be able to make room for the Stranny.

Same here, once I find those confounded markings. Might have time this fall, after the local IPMS show during the second weekend of October.

The decals have been reprinted by Thunderbird using Fantasy Prints Shop and they look superb.

Between all the life things and other things I have been pecking away at the Ju-86. Great subject; not a great kit. Clunky and flash laden plastic, and there is a lot for the rivet counters to loathe about it as well, though I am not a member of that cantankerous fraternity...as a rule. I hope to post pics soon of the build in progress.

So far....cockpit/inner deck almost ready to go, and now mated to right side of the fuselage, along with anteroom bulkheads. Passenger compartment is really almost hidden from direct view, and so I will dispense with trying to scratchbuild the ten seats that are supposed to be there. I see very little in the way of pics of it online that would serve to illustrate what is supposed to look like anyway. The anteroom where the passenger door is will need some flooring and minor details. The door itself will be glued shut with PVA in a view to maybe detail it further down the line. The wings have been assembled but will need filler and more cleanup. Masking the cockpit glazing has also been started, but being a Junkers canopy sports a multitude of panels of various shapes and sizes that will take an uncaffeinated hand to mask properly before assembly. After that I hope to get on with the engine nacelles and landing gear.
