Miguelito's Ferdinand 2-Part Blitz - DID NOT FINISH

Post by mjatx »

After finishing my first build in record time, and ease, I decided to give it a second try. This time around, it will be on another German subject, the Dragon 1/72 Sd.Kfz.184 Ferdinand.

Image

I'll probably start some time later this afternoon, and take the wimpy way out by breaking the build into two separate sessions. I really hate it when work gets in the way of drinking beer, building a model, or both.

I'm shooting for a start time around 3pm CST. I've got to clean, and restock the work space from the last build first!

Another great choice. I will look in later, I think that's about 9pm here.

Alright, here's the update, a little late, but the project has been started. I started a little later than I had planned, but I had to finish up a couple projects around the house, do some gardening, and eat. That paid off well. I was able to get a nice little haul out of the garden and with some tortilla chips/crisps and melted cheese, I was able to make a nice late lunch.

Image

I was able to get started at 5:30pm CST.
Image

I picked up this kit at our model club auction yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to see the addition of a turned metal barrel!
Image

I was even happier, because I paid less than the sticker price of the barrel, for the whole kit. :)

Here's the kit after 30 minutes.
Image

Here it is after about 90 minutes.
Image

It's a little fiddly, but mainly that's due to the size. I'm trying to get the lower hull and wheels finished, so I can prime them and work on the upper hull, and replacement gun.

For a relatively small model, I think this one's going to take the full time and most of my efforts. This should inspire me.

Well, I may have taken on more than I can handle in this timeframe. While the kit is very nice, there have been a few frustrations along the way. The lower hull took much longer to complete than expected.
Image

Any way, the lower hull is primed. Here's a picture of the upper hull resting on the lower hull, while I finished putting the gun together, another set of challenges all to itself.
Image

I was hoping to get some Dark Yellow sprayed tonight, but it looks like I'll be lucky to get everything primed.

I will say that the replacement barrel looks great. Here it is just before getting primed.

The upper turret just got a spray of primer. It's 11:33pm in my part of the world, and I'm calling it a night.

A great start and well done so far with what sounds to be a challenging kit. Turned metal gun barrels almost always make a great difference to AFV models IMHO, though they can be pricey and the ones I've bought were found in bargain boxes at model shows.

Great progress so far and I have to agree that the metal gun barrel is a big improvement.

This is impressive, especially back to back with the prior one. I seem to have a need to recover for a while after a blitz.

I was able to get the chassis, hull, and wheels primed last night.
Image

So after I got home from work, I threw on a pair of shorts, fired up the airbrush and set about working my second shift. Here's where things stood at around 6:20pm local time.
Image

About 20 minutes later, this is where we stand.
Image

My plan is to mottle a green, over the mottled dark yellow, and hopefully, some of the black primer will show thru in areas as almost a Panzer grey. We'll see, but for now, I'm happy with the results. I tried to take a "less is more" approach.

I still have to work on the tracks, which have a way of tripping me up on most armor builds. Hopefully, my luck will change.

That is amazing paint work. Can't wait for next update. And I think Smokey would approve.
