August's F-6, FINISHED
August's F-6, FINISHED
I'll be doing the Shenyang F-6 (MiG-19) by the well known and respected Plastyk company.
The kit actually looks crisply molded and flash-free with nice, though not super delicate, recessed panel detail. Everything depends on how it fits!
I'll be building it straight out of the box although I do have a spare Pavla MiG-21 cockpit set and may try to adapt the seat and instrument panel to this model.

Do not be taken by its look . Helmet, flamethrower and hammer! But the end result will be quite nice.

Great Choice. The KP -19 is a pretty decent kit that polishes up very nicely.

Re: August's F-6
Good luck! There aren't a lot of options for a 1/72 MiG-19 and this one does build up okay with some elbow grease, see my build thread from the recent 'Lesser Known Forces GB' for some of the things to look out for:

It does look alright in the end though:

Re: August's F-6
I have been working on this kit and photographing as I go but have not been able to post them due to travel. So, catching up.
No cockpit tub or consoles or provided, just a blank bulkhead for the front and a ridiculous seat. I used the Pavla MiG-21 instrument panel and bang seat, but did not do anything around the sites. The cockpit hole is small enough that not much can be seen.
The fuselage was buttoned up last week before I left town.
Upon return, I got the wings and fin on. Fit was spectacularly bad. I think the best way to get the wings on is to glue the top halves on, set the proper dihedral with them, then shape and fit the bottom halves. There will be gaps to fill no matter what.

Re: August's F-6
I am generally opposed to using filler, but I have slathered more onto this model than I can remember doing with any other kit. Seriously, I'm no stranger to KP kits, but the parts usually look like the designer had at least the vague intention that they would fit together.
Test fitting indicates that the canopy will fit no better than any other part, so I will have to install it before painting, put filler all around it, clean it up and mask it. :(

Re: August's F-6
The canopy fit horribly, standing well above the rim level and with a large overhang. Also the whole shape of the nose is wrong, with a weird triangular thing in front of the windscreen that is also not on real MiG-19s. I've had to build up the nose contours with putty so that they meet the canopy. What a miserable kit!

Re: August's F-6
Good to see you have added some plastic to your filler!
Seriously, you are doing a great job on this MiG.

Re: August's F-6
I think I now have all the putty sanded to shape, scraped the residue out of the panel lines and I've cemented the main landing gear struts so that I can weight the nose before putting on the intake front. Hoping to be ready for paint tomorrow.
