Stuart's Pair of Panthers (Grumman F9F)

Post by Stuart »

Hi all,

This is my entry into this GB - A pair of Grumman F9F Panthers.

Image

The Matchbox kit is a F9F-4 that I swapped for Mig-15 from Fred. I will be doing this as a Korean War USMC aircraft with the wings folded. To add to it I've got a Resin nose and jet pipe, and maybe a PE interior.

The Hasegawa F9F-2 kit was kindly given to me by Alan (Splash) - Thanks! This'll have a resin nose and PE interior added, and will be marked up as a Korean War USN Aircraft flown by Neil Armstrong.

I think it was the Aircraft he had to eject from after loosing 6 feet from one wing! Thanks to a cable that the North Koreans had spread accross the valley he was attacking. Neil was 20 at the time, and eventually flew 78 missions over Korea.
This'll be a clean build with no Rockets fitted.

Looking forward to the GB!

Cheers

Stuart

Nice choice on the Panther and a Matchbox one as well. IIRC doesn't it come with a set of swept wings to convert it into a Cougar??

To get the creative juices flowing check out this build of the Hase Panther..

Quite inspiring..

I shall be following with interest..

Thanks GF!

Wow that was some build! Don't think mine will be that good! But thanks for the link!

Not sure about the Cougar option, it'd be great if it did! Does give you a wingfold option though!

Regards

Nothing major yet - I've assembled and primed the MB kit wings and tail section!

Might do the Hasegawa kit in flight...

Not much worth a photo but it at least I've made progress..

I've painted up the MB cockpit ready for fitting and spent most of yesterday grinding out the awful hole that was supposed to be the jetpipe! The nice resin one looks loads better.

I've also chopped the nose off in readyness for the resin nose - annoyingly though I dropped it during test fitting and snapped a gun barrel off!!! So I'll need to fix that. One thing I need to learn I think is the use of metal tubing to improve barrels - as generally they are a week point of older kits..

Cheers

Great to see the Panther being built, it spent over twenty five years in my stash, never getting close to the top of my build pile, which was a shame as its a classic a/c that has lovely clean lines, typical of the early jets of that period.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Well thanks for passing it on Alan - I'm looking forward to cracking on with it - The plan is to get the Matchbox Fuselage buttoned up and then start the Hasegawa kit and get it to the same level - so I can paint them together.

As an aside - I'm building the Tiger you gave me on my WW thread.

Cheers

That's looking really good so far. Shame Neil Armstrong couldn't do that while in flight, it might have saved his 6' of wing.
