Daz's Last Enemy **FINISHED**

Post by DazDaMan »

I debated whether to do one or other of the two 603 Squadron Spitfires that I considered doing for this GB, but then I thought "sod it, do them both!"

This aircraft will be the mount of F/O Richard Hillary, who was shot down on 3rd September 1940 having just downed a Bf109 himself. Hillary bailed out, but was badly burned in the event, however he later underwent plastic surgery and returned to flying status later in the war. Sadly, he was killed flying a Blenheim nightfighter in January 1943.

He would, of course, become best known as the author of The Last Enemy, a book about his own experiences of flying Spitfires.

The kit for this will be the old-tool Airfix Mk.Ia. I'll pop up some photos later when Google plays ball!

My kit will be the old-tool BTK repop:

In my opinion, still one of the best 1/72 Spit kits. I prefer it to the newer version, anyway!

I'm surprised you of all people are doing a Spit
Good choice although I didn't realise it was a repop.

Well, I say repop. What I really mean is the old-tool Mk.I with the BTK decal sheet.

Either way, it's still a nice wee kit!

Cracking choice Daren. Is the book worth a read?

I haven't read it in a while, but it's certainly one of the classics of the era.

All major bits assembled. First coat of sky has gone on the undersides.

I should have blitzed this one, really!

Looking good. I will follow with interest as I just bought that book at a secondhand store although mine is a 1942 US edition and is titled 'Falling Through Space'. Who makes decals for that aircraft, Daren?

The author of the book sounded very familiar to me. On this side of the pond his book was called Falling Through Space. I have a very much dog-eared copy and it is one excellent read.

Both the book and aircraft look interesting.
