Purplethistles Airfix 1/48 NT Spit **FINISHED**

Post by Purplethistle »

As 602 Squadron is my 'Local', doing Pedro Hanburys Glasgow Squadron Spit is a no-brainer!

Good stuff, PT!

But, has nobody here told you that you can never have too many Spitfires? ;-)

Incidentally, I'm doing a 603 Squadron Spit.

Oh my word! I've just looked in the box properly for the first time. The Mk.1a is my favourite Spit so this kit is a thing of beauty within a thing of beauty!
First reaction? well, it's somewhere between that scene in Trading Places when Jamie Lee Curtis takes her top off and the first time I saw my Strat in the music store window!
Roll on tomorrow! :-D

Looks nice so far.

I have one of these in the stash, so I'll be interested to see your results.

Cheers Skipper,
This really is a beaut of a kit, the only very minor issue that I've had so far is with fitting in the frame that has the rudder pedals at one end and horizontal supports at the other (part no. C34), I had to shave the horizontal struts slightly to fit at stage 10.

Now it gets interesting, the cockpit is in a kind of 'tub' that fits inside the buttoned up fuselage and the fit is pretty tight. To anyone else making this kit, I'd advise shaving a couple of mil off the bottom of the engine firewall bulkhead as it can stop the separate coaming in front of the windscreen sitting properly. Re the coaming, the one that the instructions say to use for a 1A seems to be very slightly off, however there are 3 coamings on the sprues, so I used the 'spare' one that is not listed in the instructions, apart from a miniscule difference in the height of the ridge in front of the windscreen it looks identical to the recommended one. Close enough for me!

The one fly in the ointment is that having got ready to do the underside, my spray can of 'Sky' isn't working :frown: ....and it feels about 2 thirds full

That looks very impressive indeed. It is still hard to believe that it is actually an Airfix kit.

I'm glad you fixed the issues with the cockpit. If I remember rightly the new Me109E gave me a few problems at the back as well (but i seem to have been alone with this  ).

Got the Sky paint sorted I hope.

Regards,

Steve
