Bluesteels high-flyer Junkers 86P-1 RS Models *FINISHED*

Post by bluesteel »

Ju-86P-1 of 2 (F) Aufkl, Gr. Ob.d.L., Oranienburg, Germany, summer of 1940

A rare BoB German type used in very small numbers for long range high altitude reconnaissance for
damage done and new targets over Britain during the BoB. Flying at 12,000m it was virtually
immune from interception by any RAF fighter at the time.

The scheme I'm doing is the second one down. RLM70/71 again...

That looks interesting. Haven't seen one of these built before so I look forward to this. Presume you'll have it done by the weekend? :ha:

That looks an interesting choice.

I must admit the words 'virtually immune from interception' don't fill me with much confidence ;-)

Well it was during 1940. Interestingly the Westland Welkin was designed specifically as a countermeasure.

Interesting build - and not a type I've seen modeled often.

This one is going to need a little more time to build as it's a short run and has lots of minuscule
photo etch and film parts especially in the cockpit. Some surgery is needed for the Revell German
aircrew figures too to fit the 86P cockpit layout. Slow but steady progress so far:

The control levers for the throttle quadrant are 3mm high by 1mm wide and I'm having difficulty
picking them up even with my finest needle nose tweezers! I already managed to damage the
quadrant itself and replaced with a custom plastic part (in white)

Still working on the cockpit. I've spent almost as much time just on the cockpit area of the 86P
than I did on the whole Bf110 build! But it's getting there, even if I will only use about 2/3rds
of the PE. Herman and Schultz now installed...

The cockpit is looking really good. Is the pilot wearing a steel helmet ;-)

Never even heard of the Westland Welkin. Will you be making one of these as well to intercept it?

It's a Westland Whirlwind on steroids: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westland_Welkin;

I think CMR do a resin Welkin in 1/72 so I may indeed add one to my stash in the future. It would make an unusual, if rather one-sided, dogfight-double :)

Pressurised cockpit section now installed along with the two crew. Main wing section and tailplanes
fitted too. No much more filler used than a non-short run kit so far, so that's pretty good going:

Wing tips, fins and rudders and engine nacelles now attached. It's a good job I'm building the
1940 BoB version as the later types need significant surgery to thin down the wing tips to
model those.

First undercoats of camo going on. Then yet more PE as a row of flap actuators need to go on
the wind training edges as the falps are just helfd on by these. Will be interesting are they are
minute PE bits...

I'm liking that! Looks a bit like a giant Bf110 from some angles.
