Purplethistles Bomb Disposal tribute-**FINISHED**

Post by Purplethistle »

As my Spit is nearing completion I thought I'd attempt something a bit more off the beaten track.
I'm taking apart a die cast AEC RT London bus in order to backdate it to 1940 and some 1/48 RAF erks are about to become 'Brown jobs'!
The bus is 1/43, but to me the 1/48 erks look a tad oversized compared to other 1/48 figures so I don't think that the difference will be glaring
pics to follow........

That sounds like a great idea Purplethistle.

Will you be doing a diorama?!

I'm flattered at your impression of my abilities Narayan, but my dio will be a bit more modest!

Here's the bus that came with one of those partwork mags

Oh blinking flip! I had planned to take the bus apart to do the painting more easily ( Grey roof, white window surround area 1940 livery ) but even though it is held together with Phillips screws, the little flippers will not loosen
Still researching period advert posters to make up decals to cover the more modern ones on the bus. Also german bombs of WW2, ideally SC250 or similar size

On the plus side, I've taken the RAF 'Jumper guy' and converted the jumper to a battledress tunic and shaved the trouser leg bottoms into gaiters.
'Kneeling ammo guy' has also got gaiters now and 'Overalls guy' can be used as is.

...now, how am I going to do a city street with a big hole in the ground :???:

Much research into 1940 bus routes and numbers later.....the bus has authentic 1940 adverts on, 1940 livery and I'm just finishing the new destination boards ( the original ones were later style upper and lower case lettering)
The base is the lid of a 5 ream paper box with a hole cut to make the excavation around the UXB. On the inside of the lid I taped a rough surfaced 'tub' of packing cardboard for depth. Now for bits of buildings!

Pics later.....

Wartime livery, adverts and destination boards done (but paint will need a retouch where handling has rubbed some off! :frown: )

Not great photos, can't really see the added weathering...

...and the base gets started.

A box lid for the base so that I can cut a hole where the bomb is being dug out.
Sandbags are made from (a lot of) chewing gum rolled to a sausage shape, nipped into individual sandbags with the back of a blade, and painted with a wash of Khaki acrylic.

This chewing gum, is it fresh or used?

A bit more progress on the Bomb Disposal dio, although the clock really is ticking now, as I have still to make a background building from scratch!

I can see how you'd think that I've maybe used individual chiclets for sandbags Steve, but it is used chewing gum (or 'pre-enjoyed') :-D

Get the flarepath ready Skipper, it will not be as detailed as I would like, but I think I might bring this one home after the daylight's gone!

I've had to wait for plaster on the dio base to dry before painting, but if I can get a couple of hours in tonight, I might have something halfway presentable.

Fuse, gaine and picric removed, this one is safe.
My tribute to the Bomb Disposal guys. As the Battle of Britain turned, their battle began.
