Martin's Matchbox Stranraer

Post by martin hale »

This is silly! I bought the kit, and after market specially for this group build, which I have been looking forward to for ages, so why not have a bash? If my health stops me finishing on time then so be it, I can still complete the model in my own time. Having a go seems better that watching everyone else having a good time without me.

That being the case, I will get a picture of the box top up asap and crack on.

You can never have too many Stranraers! What exciting AM stuff did you get for this?

That's one of those kits I really fancy but know if I got one it would stay at the bottom of my build list.

So I will settle for enjoying watching you build yours.

Well, here at last are the box top and contents photos. I will be replacing the kit engines with some after market CMK Pegasus items and tarting up the gun mounts with some Eduard etch. The model will be a Pembroke Dock based machine, reflecting my love for that part of the world.

I have this morning free to do some modelling and plan to get as much of the wings, floats and tail surfaces glued together and prepared for rigging as possible and maybe a start on the interior.

Catch you all later.

Those extra parts will make a big difference, as in my experience matchbox kits tend to have soft detail and AM detail like gun rings and engines sharpen the whole kit up.

A quick update to show that I have been plugging away at this. I have got the main flying surfaces together and am in the process of cleaning up joins and thinning the unfeasibly thick trailing edges down. I have also been drilling the holes for the rigging. The fit of the upper wing panels to the centre section does not look very good and I am going to have to be very careful I do not lose too much detail when filling and sanding this area.

I have started with the wings on this kit as I have found in the past that, if one gets the wings on a biplane right, then the battle is already half won with the kit.

That's looking good so far, a kit I've always fancied but never had the bottle.

Btw, I love Poole. Got many good memories of sitting outside the Jolly Sailor, especially on a Tuesday night

You're spot on about the wings, Martin.. and I don't mind admitting, the sight of that multi-coloured plastic brings a lump to the throat

Nostalgia, eh? Ain't what it used to be... :-D

I also have a Stranny on my current workbench, and the biggest problem I have encountered thus far is establishing the correct dihedral for the top wing assembly. Unfortunately there is nothing in the instructions that give any clue as to the correct angles required. I have to agree with Martin that the top wing assembly is very fragile, and really should be strengthened before proceeding.
