Re: Splash's bird on a stick
I feel the Tamiya "wooden deck tan" was ideal as a base coat for the wood but is too dark and brown for the wings so I have given them an over sprey with Tamiya " Deck tan" to lighten them up.
Next is the bit I never enjoy, that's trying to fit the upper wings

Were the struts from the kit material strong enough in the end or did you go for brass rod?
Is this your sanderling?.

Re: Splash's bird on a stick
The white metal centre struts worked well and the strut material as supplied would have worked fine but I found it easier to drill a hole through the bottom wing and pass a plastic rod through the hole up to the upper wing and then stick and trim it once set, this will eventually be covered by the large decals on the lower wing.Arcwelder wrote:Were the struts from the kit material strong enough in the end or did you go for brass rod?
Using the thin struts supplied with the kit would work but would be fiddly to cut and stick in place.

Great, really great job! If I had not seen your other models, then I might have wondered whether somewhere near you is not sitting Merlin the Wizard ;)

Thanks, not magic just luck some times you do get a model that surprises you when you build it and this is one of them.Przemek wrote:Great, really great job! If I had not seen your other models, then I might have wondered whether somewhere near you is not sitting Merlin the Wizard ;)

Good, good.. I'll likely do similar when the time comes to ruin mine. What about the struts for the floats?splash wrote:The white metal centre struts worked well and the strut material as supplied would have worked fine but I found it easier to drill a hole through the bottom wing and pass a plastic rod through the hole up to the upper wing and then stick and trim it once set, this will eventually be covered by the large decals on the lower wing.Arcwelder wrote:Were the struts from the kit material strong enough in the end or did you go for brass rod?

Re: Splash's bird on a stick
For the floats I used the struts provided for the uprights from the floats to the body but used brass rods between the floats for strength and to keep it ridged.

Re: Splash's bird on a stick
I have a busy weekend away so will not have time to rig the little Albatros before the GB closes.
Therefore I will get it to the finished unrigged state tonight and call it finished. I must confess I have really enjoyed this little kit and I'm happy with the way it turned out, especially the wood effect on the fuselage, this was something I had always avoided in the past.
All I need to do is paint the spinner as I have already painted the props and take some pictures.
Regards Splash
