Back in the day, I used to do quite a bit of wargaming. Not such a popular hobby nowadays, and I don't have a whole lot of time to devote to it, but I have been thinking about getting a couple of solo games to get my eye back in.
Can anyone recommend either a 1. PC-based game or 2. board game, that is strategy-based (can't stand 'shoot-em-ups'). Period is not so important, though I have a preferencve for WWII or Ancients.

Re: Solo Wargames
For total immersion PC wargames I would recommend the Hearts of Iron series, especially 2 and 3, very in-depth strategy with complete control over just about everything. I've lost many hours altering the outcome of WW2 and starting WW3 thanks to these.

Re: Solo Wargames
I was also a bit of a wargamer. I cut my teeth on Panzer Blitz by Avalon Hill. It's an Eastern front armour/infantry turn strategy wargame. It, and Panzer Leader (its follow up for Europe), are still very good games. If memory serves, Blitz has some rules for solo play - but any wargame is much better against an opponent.
Here's some info from boardgamegeek

Command HQ is an old game from the late 80's basic yet compelling and easy to learn how to play.

Civilisation V is a good strategy game; best solo boardgame I have ever played is RAF; a Battle of Britain game; takes up quite a bit of space;but is nailbiting.
Also recommend Panzer General II, Chariot Wars, Cossacks

For a good computer strategy game, with Sci -fi, go for Sid Maier's Alpha Centauri (it's Civilization III in space). It has a good artificial intelligence to play against.
For a solo board game, I can highly recommend Ambush! by Victory Games. Squad level WW2 combat. The game was published in 1983, but eBay copies do appear.
Cheers
