Hawker Aviation centenery

Post by Gregers »

Just a heads up to an important anniversary this year. It is 100 years ago since Hawker engineering was founded, the forrunner of the Hawker Aviation company. Thank you Hawkers for a long line of fine and historic aircraft.

All the best

I would guess at the cut off would be when the original Hawker group became defunct. A quick bit of research says that would be 1963 which encompasses the Hawker Sidley product line. So roughly anything up to the Harrier GR3 would carry the lineage.

According to Francis Mason in Hawker Aircraft since 1920, the last Hawker was P.1127.
The Kestrel & Harrier came under the H-S name.

The Hawker Siddeley group actually dates back to the 1930s. In its original form it also included Armstrong Whitworth and Glosters. That's one of the reasons why, in the 1950s, Armstrong Whitworth built Meteor night fighters and Armstrong Whitworth also built Hawker Sea Hawks.

The group was massively expanded under the great consolidation of the UK aviation industry in the early 1960s when it also brought in Avro. A couple of years later, De Havilland joined the group.

The big difference is that until the final consolidation, by and large, the individual companies within the group were allowed to use their names as the preface for aircraft that originated in their design offices - although there were some exceptions.

Did you know that the twin booms on the Armstrong Whitworth Argosy were based on the rear fuselage of the night fighter Meteors - also built by Armstrong-Whitworth?

My Nan and Grandad were born and bred in Kingston upon Thames just round the corner from the Hawker factory. My Grandad worked there, I´m sure I remember him talking about Fury´s.

When I did my gradate apprenticeship with HSA at Kingston in 1976-78, I worked with and lived near a guy who was the "Mr Fixit" for folks restoring Hawker aircraft and looking for the only widget that could attach part A to part B. I remember him proudly finding in some dusty corner of the factory a tool that put a square end on a round tube so you could assemble a truss structure - probably for the original Fury.

In Aus, it was Hawker De Havilland for many years, so for me the two are synonymous. I didn't realise til now that it was only a local thing and they hadn't merged in the UK.

Depending on timing I'd be interested. Probably the Airfix Demon, or one of a number of DH options.
