Re: OT's Springbok Mirage III
Thanks again guys. 'gizmology', I like that.
Two things happened last night. Firstly I broke the pitot tube off. Every time!
Secondly I sprayed a coat of primer on.
So this brings me to the tricky problem of South African Air Force colours. I have read loads on this subject but matching up what is written with model paints that are available is not easy.
I had always thought an indeed previously painted the undersides an off white colour as this is what 'Light Admiralty grey' suggested to me.
Recent research indicates that this should be a light blue colour as can be seen in this illustration:
To confirm this, I think this image shows a pale blue underside. Would you guys agree?
Can I really see blue or am I fooling myself?

Re: OT's Springbok Mirage III
Firstly, I have to tell you I am officially red-green colourblind.
That said, maybe these pics I took at the SAAF Museum in Swartkop will help
FWIW This article suggests the F1s got a blue similar to Humbrol 65 applied to their undersides. http://www.groundshout.co.za/misc/mirag ... 1AZ_CZ.pdf

Re: OT's Springbok Mirage III
Looks blue to me, but wasn't there a pic circulating on the net about a dress that looked two different colours.
Go blue.

Re: OT's Springbok Mirage III
Thanks for the images and link David, just the job.
I am glad the article states Humbrol 65. This is what I went with:
I used Revell Aquacolor 36149 Hellblau - which I guess is RLM 65. I think it is a pretty good match.
This needs a coat of Klear before masking then on to the tricky 'Deep Buff' of the camo pattern.
I will experiment with Revell Aquacolor 36188 Ochre Brown: http://www.revell.de/en/products/colors ... 36188.html

Re: OT's Springbok Mirage III
I managed to mask off the underside and apply the first part of the camo today. The Deep Buff:
I like that colour. I think it will be my standard for SAAF builds from now on.

Re: OT's Springbok Mirage III
Too late now!
I spent a pleasant evening masking the camo pattern as I felt it was beyond my free hand skills.
I will get some green on today then unmask. Wish me luck.

Quite relaxing actually. I did it whilst watching the football yesterday.TobyC wrote:That looks like it was fun
I got a couple of coats of green on this morning before work so I will do the reveal tonight.
There will be images soon unless it's a complete b@lls up - in which case it will be a DNF!

Re: OT's Springbok Mirage III
Oddball is one of my favourite all time characters.
Back to the build & I removed all the masking last night.
Not too bad, just a few touch ups needed where paint has bled through. I will get that sorted this evening then tackle the nose cone and fuel tanks.
Another issue is my lack of decals. (yes I know but I thought I had a suitable set. ) I have the castle roundels, numbers and safety markings but am missing the tri-colour tail band and Mirage III lettering. Might need some clever painting.

Very nice. That buff colour looks very good. I have the decals you need but I'm in US so I can't get them to you in time to meet GB deadline but let me know if you want them.
