Le Boom! *BOOM BOOM*
Even after spending out on a kit for this GB I wasn't sure if I would have time to build it. However, I've put my foot down and told Mrs Dazzled that she can do the bloody decorating herself. She started it and I'm jiggered if I'm clearing up her mess with no plan or materials to hand.
So this is my entry.
The French ballistic missile submarine Le Redoutable in 1/400th scale.
It doesn't have a huge amount of parts.
But, unfortunately, it's not a great kit.
The main problem on inspection is sink marks. They're everywhere
The worst ones are along the saddle that sits on the hull. These are evident on both sides.
But there are others.
There are marks like this relative to almost every pin or locating socket on the kit. Really Heller, this isn't on. What about quality control? The sprue gates are certainly big enough to get enough styrene in there!
Anyhow, I've started some tentative construction.
This is the aft stabiliser assembly. it's pretty fiddly to put together as there are no locator pins or marks to assist the modeller. This has to be built first as it's trapped by the hull halves when they get joined together.
It's a bit oddly engineered for a sub kit though. More akin to an aircraft model IMHO.
Another update after the next marital argument

Cracking choice. Don't get that many boats in GBs.
Enjoyment over accuracy. That's my motto

An interesting subject, Dazzled. I really sympathise with you having all those sink marks to contend with but hey, at least you got out of the decorating

Very true. And I even elicited an apology out of the wife
And, despite time constraints this weekend (new internet TV box ), I have managed a bit of progress.
Sub kits do usually go together quite quickly. This one however isn't playing ball. The hull is vertically split, with no separate conning tower, a' la aircraft kit, and the joint isn't all it could be. In fact I had to stitch glue it together bit by bit in order to achieve a modicum of alignment. Then I fired up the cement mixer and started filling.
Eventually....
...much of the hull seams were filled and so were most of the sink marks. The last serious part to fill was the sink line all the way around the sail that corresponds to the support ridge inside.
After sanding back...
....the extent of the sink mark is evident.
Then I cemented the top onto the sail. This is meant to be flush all the way around.
Obviously, more sanding is in order. The thing I'm concerned about is the amount of material I'll need to remove. I might actually end up sanding all the way through
So much for a quick build

Re: Le Boom!
Despite work getting in the way this is actually progressing....... slowly. I've spent a fair amount of the limited modelling time I've had sorting out seams but finally these seem to be giving up the fight.
A spray coat of matt black from rattle can has showed up the last of them and I've given these a small dose of Vallejo plastic putty. Hopefully this'll result in a suitable finish for a final paint job.

Re: Le Boom!
Indeed it does
It's wonderful what a couple of days off work can do for one's modelling output.
in this case:
Diving planes fitted, final paint and a coat of Klear applied.
Then, today, decals on.
Very few, and they went on quite nicely with Microsol assistance. Note the stands which needed quite a bit of sanding to remove ejector pin marks.
And some of the extraneous bits being readied.
That prop will need another coat of paint.
The model is currently in the garage having received a matt coat. Hopefully, I'll be able to make more progress before the day is out.

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Re: Le Boom!
Thanks Fred
I was indeed able to make more progress today. So much so that I got this one finished.
Apologies for the quality of the pictures but subs aren't easy to take pictures of. This is on top of the fact that the batteries in my borrowed camera have packed up and there are no more in the house.
Now to get back to the B-29

Re: Le Boom! *BOOM BOOM*
Nice work on that, funny how something as simple looking as a sub never turns out to be that way. Well tackled and finished
