Dazzled's Forgotten War

To build a pairing of machines which would have had a dog-fight, which is the general term for fighter aeroplanes fighting each other. It does not include bomber interception, or missile attacks, but does include "dogfight" type combat of ships, AFV, Sci-Fi, etc.

Dazzled's Forgotten War

Post by Dazzled »

I'm going to produce a couple of combatants from a conflict I'm sure few of us will be familiar with. In 1939, Japan and the Soviet Union fought a border war over territories adjoining Manchuria. This conflict was known as the battles of Khalkhin Gol. During the conflict much use was made of air power and many dogfights ensued between Soviet Polikarpov fighters and Japanese Nakajima Ki-27 Nates.

Having a Heller I-153 in the stash gave me the idea of building a DD using this kit, mainly because it's something a bit different, and a KI-27 that I had to acquire before committing to the build. After researching what was available I decided to try and obtain one of the old Hasegawa (ex-Mania) kits as I had read that the ICM kit, despite being 30 years newer, was a bit of a pig to build. Happily I've just won a Hasegawa Ki-27 on eBay, in "as new" condition according to the vendor and I've just pulled the I-153 out of the stash.

The box is a bit battered and I'll need to find markings among my spare decals but I'm quite looking forward to starting this one.

Thats a very nice kit. I built the Smer issue of it.
I seem to remember that my instructions had the wing struts the wrong way round, ie port one on starboard.
Naturally I did mine in Finnish markings.
I probably have the kit's decal sheet somewhere if you need it.
The Ki-27 sounds good too.

Wow - great idea Darryl!

Funny, but I've just read about that battle in the WWII history book I've just started!

Are going to have them on a stand?

Yep, and very likely an Airfix DD stand. I've got 4 of them.

The I-153's adversary arrived a couple of days ago.

I'm afraid though that a start may have to wait a week or two while I make some room. In all honesty I've made a bit of a faux pas with the dates for this GB and I'm a bit over-extended as far as builds are concerned

Still got some things I'd like to get ready for Telford and a bloody great Superfortress hogging the bench but I will be taking part. Just bear with me. :)

Looking forward to seeing it built Darryl!

I made a tentative start a few days ago but I've only just found time to upload the pictures.

Just a little pre-painting of interior parts....

The I-153

The Ki-27

I also decided that now would be a good time to fill some rather nasty sink marks in the undercarriage.

And the pilots, suitably identified.

Undercoated with matt black spray paint. The Nate came with a pilot but "Ivan" was sourced from the spares box. I don't recall his origins but he does look the part. :)

Just a quick update guys. These are providing a bit of relief from my ongoing wrestling match with the ICM Foxbat.

Ivan is fully painted and in his seat.

Image

Tojo is too although, despite his diminutive stature, he wouldn't sit down properly so some drastic surgery was required.

Image

Then both were locked in so they couldn't escape.

Image

I got even further and attached the wings. It's easy to forget how quickly simple kits like this can come together.

Image

The Nate is a bit of a filler monster but to be fair it is a forty odd year old kit so I can't complain, plus it is quite fun to build.
