Arc's Tumult In The Clouds..

To build a pairing of machines which would have had a dog-fight, which is the general term for fighter aeroplanes fighting each other. It does not include bomber interception, or missile attacks, but does include "dogfight" type combat of ships, AFV, Sci-Fi, etc.

OK, made a start at my GF's house last night, so excuse the godawful phone camera photos.

Revell Nieuport ..

and an Airfix Albatros

Image

Both of these are of the old school, meaning very basic and chuff-all detail

(again, excuse the lousy photos)

SWMBO was looking over my shoulder and meekly enquired if she might have a go, so I let her take her pick and she's been happily painting the Nieuport's interior, props, engine and the amorphous blob of styrene that she lovingly refers to as "Eddie".. we may have a convert here.. ;-)

I'll have her rigging in no time

It's when she refers to "Our stash" that you'll have to worry!

No word of a lie, the Airfix Albatros is a Capital P porcine mammal.. obviously Eduard and Roden (among others) have filled the gap with their own Albatrosen in 1/72, but if Airfix feel like doing some more new-tool WWI subjects, this would be a good place to start.

Anyway, dealing with enormous ejector pin marks in a very visible place..

I'll get SWMBO cracking on the Nieuport after the Bake-Off final tomorrow!

Some sort of irritating adverse reaction happened between the acrylics, oil and varnish on the Albatros fuselage (see DH2 build for details) so there's a minor delay while I clean it all off and start again.

If you have to redo it, try putting on a base of acrylic natural wood then drawing on the wood grain with a sharp reddish brown watercolour pencil and then spraying with varnish. The spray varnish usually softens the pencil lines nicely, whereas a brush applied varnish would smudge it too much.

Hmm.. worth an experiment, for sure. because I brush paint I usually use artist's oils for the grain effect, but I DO have a rattlecan of acrylic gloss lurking around. In addition, because I'm going for plywood-effect, I'd use a lighter shade than Hu 110.

it's comin along..

Albatros looking like a plane now.

Reasonably pleased with plywood-effect (2nd attempt  )

Holes are drilled for rigging, MGs on, what passes for an engine in place. Tail is on, now just to tidy up some bits and bobs on the painy, put some decals on, weather the engine and it'll be time to play with struts and fishing line :party

Thanks for looking
