PT's Banff Wing Mossie **FINISHED**

Post by Purplethistle »

Just a place marker here at the moment, I have an event in early Oct. that I need to get some paintings finished in time for. Work will progress on the 12th.

Nice choice. The Banff wing markings look good. What kit will you be using?

All the best.

The old Airfix 'Tsetse' Mossie as a 248 Sqn kite, but I'll be doing it as a VI, as the Tsetses all went back South in late '44.
I thought that I was in luck as the kit decals could be altered to 248s 'DM - ?' codes, but the kit ones are red and the Banff Mossies had black. :frown:
...and typically, 248 seemed to be the least photographed squadron

I had a similar problem with some codes (red was too bright). I overpainted the decal codes in the correct shade with a size OOO brush. Maybe that could work for you?

All the best.

Just the 1/72, EJ, I've got too much going on this month to be too ambitious!

Thanks for the offer EJ, but I've found a photo that I printed off a while ago for this specific build and the one that I want to do DOES have red codes.

Will look forward to this one.

I'm doing the same kit, so I'll keep my eyes on PT's build.

Hmmm! Because I'm doing the hard demarkation grey over sky scheme on this one I was separating the main parts for pre-painting before assembly when I noticed that the left hand half of the port engine nacelle (part no. 60) has a pin where there should be a hole for the u/c to go in. Anyone else noticed this?

Oh heck, you had me checking mine as it's together with the plan of fitting the u/c after painting. Quick check shows all holes there

Progress report.
Everything but u/c and canopy pre-painted so far, just about to put the big bits together. I had started detailing the 'pit sides, but a test fit of the canopy reveals that only the crew and the radio shelf can really be seen so I'll just concentrate on them.
Having read the excellent book, 'A separate little war' on the Banff Strike wing, I have discovered that the Banff mossies had problems with the rocket rails and developed simpler aluminium ones, and later still used a pair of two-tier rails on each wing, outboard of the long range tanks. I think I have some that I can use left over from my Academy MkXIV Spit. Pics soon.

Looks like a good start, always good to see another mossie on the go!
Best wishes

My first "D'oh!" moment of this build. I don't know if it was like this when I got the kit or if it has happened in the couple of years that it was in the loft, but the the thin strips on the rear of the lower wing halves at the wing root were curled like Ali Baba's slippers! Fortunately the behaved and conformed under clamping, but I was so distracted by this that I forgot to put the light transparencies into the lower wings.
Nil Desperandum, I'll just park the wings upside down and fill the holes with PVA.
