Hispano Ha-1112-M4L **FINISHED**
Hispano Ha-1112-M4L **FINISHED**
My second build is very much something of a rarity!
I saw this beast on eBay, and as I have a huge interest in the aircraft used in the making of Battle of Britain, it had to be bought!!
The Buchon is, of course, the Spanish-built, Merlin-engined version of the Bf109G-2. Over 170 of these aircraft were built, but only a couple of trainer versions. (Depending on your sources, it's either one built, or one built and one converted from another variant.)
The sole surviving example was, of course, used in the filming of Battle of Britain (along with my other subject, Spitfire Tr.9 MJ772). She served as both a trainer, converting the film company's group of pilots to the type, and also as a camera platform for the flying sequences. Indeed, while little of the footage shot from the M4L made it into the final cut, much of it has been reused over the years in other films and documentaries, including a couple of brief shots in the film Dark Blue World. Unlike the Spitfire, however, which could be flown with little difficulty from the back seat, I doubt that the Buchon was used in the same capacity, which was to shoot some of the pilots' POV shots, specifically in the dogfight scenes. I could be wrong!
At Duxford, with some of the other film "Messerschmitts":
This aircraft was one of the large number of Buchons (and a single-seat Spitfire) which eventually wound up with Wilson "Connie" Edwards at his facility in Big Springs, Texas, where it was stored for over forty years. Edwards eventually put his collection of film aircraft up for disposal, and they were all eventually sold - although were this particular airframe has ended up hasn't yet been confirmed.
When the aircraft was put up for sale - note the incorrect tail!

Excellent choice. Are you going for the movie scheme or the Spanish one?
Is this your sanderling?.

I didn't know a model of this version was available. I've put aside a resin nose conversion and an Avia CS199 to make one.

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Another great choice Daren. I didn't know that this kit existed.

Re: Hispano Ha-1112-M4L - two-seater Buchon
I've discovered it's actually the single-seater version with the two-seater tail and canopy that need sticking on. Shouldn't present too many problems.
I hope...!

Oh! I did not expect the Spanish Inquisition here
But I've been watching with curiosity and pleasure.

Buchon bits:
On the instruction sheet, you can just make out the resin tail and cockpit parts, as well as the two(!) transparencies for the canopy. The kit has to be converted from the single-seater version to make the trainer model. The decal sheet has both the red and yellow number/badge options for the aircraft, but I'll be doing it as Red 11 (as per the recent photos).
The instruction sheet is all in German, and as I don't sprechen much Deutsch, I'll have to try to remember my training(!) from building the Academy kit....!

Daren! It grows you interesting collection!
Andrew! In my bar I have a bottle of Johnnie. He has suspiciously red uniform...
But he says, he is a walker from Scotland. Should I believe him? Or should I be afraid hidden Spanish Inquisition?

How hard can it be?DazDaMan wrote:... On the instruction sheet, you can just make out the resin tail and cockpit parts, as well as the two(!) transparencies for the canopy. The kit has to be converted from the single-seater version to make the trainer model.

So my idea of a conversion might be ok. The CS-199 has the right tail. Just the nose to chop.
and..... if you only use one of those canopies please can I work a deal with you for the other? pretty please. Its the only part I'd need to fashion up for my conversion.

I'd be happy to swap, Fred, but I think the canopy shapes are quite different:

I actually don't have a canopy for the CS199. I'll need to carve a blank and vac mould one - when I get that far.

I can help with the German if you need a translation Daz. But Google translate is pretty good between English and German.

Re: Hispano Ha-1112-M4L - two-seater Buchon
I think I'll just about manage - it might be a bit "trial and error", but I'll get there.
Hopefully!
The easiest thing about this will be the paint scheme. I've had plenty of practice doing single-seaters, so a two-seater should present no problems!
