Lancfan's Hurricane ***Finished***
This is the model I will build for this GB.
HB have over-simplified this one, after building the superb MiG-15 kits earlier this year this one is a dissapointment as with a little more effort they could have made an accurate Hurricane but instead they have flattened the fuselage sides and spoilt the nose shape with ill-fitting parts, the base of the kit is just two parts, a solid wing and a clumsily rendered fuselage.
The locating pins for these are very tight so I slackened them by shortening the tops of the pins and enlarging the sockets with a drill before glueing these parts together.
The fuselage faults shown after assembly, the nose is fixable but correcting the rear fuselage is just too much work and not worth the effort. I had hoped that this kit would be a low cost path to an accurate metal wing Hurricane and had intended to build this as a planned addition to my display shelves but this eyesore will have no part in my collection.
David.

Re: Lancfan's Hurricane
Their Spitfire Vb isn't their finest either. They usually are good kits but occasionally a wrongun turns up and it would appear the Hurricane is another. Shame really but I'm sure you'll make it into a good build regardless.

Re: Lancfan's Hurricane
The Spitfire is correctable with a new prop, canopy and wheel covers. I've seen theories that the Hurricane copies the shape of the Academy kit, which is also skinny.TobyC wrote:Their Spitfire Vb isn't their finest either. Andrew, the Hobby Boss hurricane isn't skinny it is flat sided.

Re: Lancfan's Hurricane
I haven't had time to post my work during the week, this is how the model has progressed, the model is here ready for paint.
The next step was to paint the wings, the outer panels are in basic late war camouflage and the centre section is in modern etch prime finish.
The outer panels were then varnished and thinly coated in alluminium.
The alluminium was then gently rubbed down with fine wet or dry paper to give a very worn and weathered finish.
The rear fuselage and tail unit was painted in terracota to represent the red oxide dope covering the clear shrinking dope over the fabric.
I had originally intended to paint this as a preserved aircraft but had a change of plan and replaced the mustard etch prime finish with grey undercoat to represent an aircraft being prepared for display as a station gate guard post-war.

Great job of doing the worn metalwork David!
Best wishes

Re: Lancfan's Hurricane
With the final parts assembled and the airframe touched in and varnished the model is now complete.

Critique-
I had hoped this would be as accurate as the new MiG-15 kits but I was sorely dissapointed. The cockpit is vestigial and although the outlines and proportions are spot on the fuselage cross section is dire- the sides a flat and the lower rear decking is almost so, it seems more home-built than Hawker, more film prop than fighter. this was to have been an ideal kit for those colour scheme based conversion I had planned but I must now look elsewhere. I have not checked out the AZ Hurricane kits yet, having built a number of their excellent spitfires but their Hurricanes may well be the answer.

Now that is not your usual Hurricane. Very nice even if the kit wasn't the best
