Where Have All the Flowers Gone *** Finished ***

Any subject, any scale, just so long as it fits within the outer diameter of a CD (or DVD, or BlueRay). And some of those famous UAMF extra ninja brownie bonus points if you can match the CD/DVD with the subject of the build.

Where Have All the Flowers Gone *** Finished ***

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

With the Flowers, as a class, being my favorite and just one left of that valiant band, what else could I do ?

I saw HMCS Sackville during a trip to Halifax three years ago. Smart looking tub. Am looking forward to your usual excellent work, John.

Hmmm, perhaps I should look at converting HMS Bluebell to HMCS Sackville ....

That would be pretty decent. I believe the ship is currently painted in its 1944 kit.

I know Sackville was updated to the long f'c'sle in 1944 and served briefly in that configuration before being laid up by boiler problems and then selection for major conversion to an anti-submarine loop ship.

Regardless, one convoy in that configuration is enough, she served long and well in her early configuration. Bluebell and Sackville are close enough, the Canadian Flowers had some differences in the location and type of aft AA guns; little else will be visible at 1/700.

I'll study the colors on some photos, but it seems like a good idea.

Just to get started, here's the usual shots ...

Very tiny parts and photo-etch ... If you missed it, the scale is 1/700 ... The blank CD and the case are what I'll use for the display mounting ...

Image

The assembly drawings are about 3 times the size of the model ...

Image

Image

And if the model were this big, I might be able to neatly paint the details ... I'll modify it for Sackville ... Need to find some tiny decals ...

Well, I started on the base, thinking I'd use something proposed by another earlier - the CD base.

I found a jpeg of the album cover, printed to size and fit it into a CD case, as so.

Image

But that seemed to overshadow the model, not to mention the cover art.

So I decided to cut about 1/4 off the cover art and shrink the top of the case nearly half. I also wanted to add some background, so I modified the cover art .... This seems to be a bit more in proportion although perhaps the cover art could sit a few mm higher to be clear of the bottom.

Image

Here's the new cover art ...

Image

I might take another cut at this and try to get the "Songs of Seeger" section out, but that will require me to repair the instrument neck and I'm never good at that. We shall see ....

Tomorrow, I'll look at adding some sheet styrene in the four corners of the base, maybe fixing up the back side, and painting it metallic black. Then I can get to work on the ocean and a place for the hull to sit ....

That's a great bit of work John and I like where you're going with this.

Is the ship in the 'Cruel Sea' a Flower Class? If so I had no idea that they were THAT small.

Cheers
