Fly Me to the Moon - BLAST OFF (I mean Finished)
Here's my CD cover and the model I plan to build.
I chose this because, apart from hopefully being a fun build that I actually finish, this seemed right to me on a few levels, : it's the centenary of Sinatra's birth, the song and the classic Disney Moonliner just go together and the original Disney Moonliner was erected in 1955, the year I was born! How serendipitous is all that?
Here's the original Disney MoonLiner in DisneyLand back in 1955.
The MoonLiner kit was originally issued by Strombecker in the 50s. Glencoe re-issued it in 1996 and titled it Mars Liner, apparently due to some Disney copyright issues. However, Glencoe have been very clever - if you look closely at the decals, you will see that by cutting some lettering off it, you are left with the original TWA logo worn by the Disney MoonLiner.
I haven't decided yet on what I can do as a diorama base for it but here's the pics of the parts and the highly detailed instruction sheet.

Re: Fly Me to the Moon
Thanks, guys.
Splash, it looks like it will stand about 11" tall and the tripod legs should fit on a CD as far as I have been able to measure it from the parts.

It's my model and I'll do what I want with it.

Re: Fly Me to the Moon
I actually bought this kit in Disneyland back in 2007 (I think). I have always wanted to display as in the park.
Here is a pic I took of it in Tomorrowland last month.

Being born in the 50's I love these retro designs, my favourite was the Tin Tin rocket that's not to dissimilar to this.

Or you could use the well known album from Landscape:
"From the Tearooms of Mars to the hell holes of Uranus"

Re: Fly Me to the Moon
Thanks for the pics. The history of the Disney MoonLiner rocket is interesting. The original (with TWA logo) was 76 feet tall and in place from 1955 to 1967 (with a logo change at some point to Douglas Aircraft Corporation). A slightly smaller version was installed in the late 90s - which is the one you photo'd on the Coca-Cola kiosk. There were also two 22 ft versions over the years in Kansas City - the first being atop the TWA headquarters building!.philp wrote:I actually bought this kit in Disneyland back in 2007 (I think). It does look cool and totally impractical, doesn't it? I had been tempted to put large delta wings on it at one time but this will be OOB.splash wrote:Being born in the 50's I love these retro designs, my favourite was the Tin Tin rocket that's not to dissimilar to this.
One of my favourite Bowie songs and a good alternative but I think I'll stick with the Moon this timePurplethistle wrote:Might have to change the CD to David Bowie, Life on Mars?jRatz wrote:Other than the kit says "Mars Lander" this is great !

Re: Fly Me to the Moon
David,
I watched a build of this kit a few years back and a couple tips the guy used were some plastic sheet inside the landing leg bays to hide the seams and replaced the rods for the landing legs with some aluminum tubing (at least, I think that is what he used).
Lots of cool pictures out there on Google Images under just TWA Moonliner or TWA Moonliner model or Disney TWA Moonliner to give you lots of options on how to base it.
There is also a large resin kit of this by Masterpiecemodels that is 41 inches tall if anyone is inclined.

Re: Fly Me to the Moon
We have ignition - well, we have glued plastic in my case.
I glued the panels in that make close up the gaps where the legs would retract - I suppose it's the equivalent to the top of a wheel well! Not sure if you can see it, but there's a tiny toothed track down the edge of each side of the landing gear opening - representing the track that the gear upper end moves up and down during the retraction/extension process. Neat little touch.
Also glued together the landing legs. The moulded halves are not well aligned and will need some cleanup and one of the three is a bit warped.
Well it's not much but it's a start!

Just seen this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-35157739;
the design is no-longer as sci-fi as it once was.
