Oh, if you ever feel like a vacation over here, there's a very good bluegrass session every Tuesday in my tiny local (a complete throwback community pub with excellent stout). Invite stands open.

Judging by the state of it he uses it for both... at the same timemjatx wrote:Very interesting looking project. Not sure about Paul, but that coffee cup definitely makes me sick. I was hoping it was actually for cleaning your brushes, not ingesting.
Great subject John - always nice to see one of your interesting WWI builds.
Stuart Templeton I may not be good but I'm slow...

John's coffee cup has long since passed into UAMF legend. And let's face it, what's the point in having an immune system if you're not going to use it?

Re: Mikr Mir 1/350 K-class Submarine
Back.
Not easy to see, but I resolved the conning tower overhang by adding a "vanity skirt" to the bottom. I spent the rest of the hour adding about a dozen photo-etch details, one being the hatch from the conning tower to the interior which will be near invisible when the top goes on, but we know it is there. The photo-etch is thin but too flexible; it's got clear sticky sheet on both sides and once you argue that off it distorts some parts. In a couple places, noticeably the big side doors, they aren't laying flat.
Also, the stand is done.
This is really going smoothly, knock on wood, but I have to see what SWMBO has in mind ...

Liking it a lot.

Re: Mikr Mir 1/350 K-class Submarine
OK, I'm only 8.5 hours into this and may call it a day.
I've added anchors, dive planes, the conning tower, 2 stacks, a couple of ladders I forgot before, and all the prop shafts.
The prop shafts were a problem - 5 parts with some tiny marks as to where things went but not much else. I spent 30 minutes poking and pushing things about to get them reasonably in line before the glue hardened. I'll bet there should have been a notch in the keel to hold the cross-piece. Anyway, they are going to sit for a couple hours to really harden before I do anything else.
So, I have periscopes, masts, handrails on the superstructure, the props themselves, and maybe some railings - or not.
Time to paint the bottom dark grey which will be a rattle can, then mask that off, put on the parts mentioned above, then do the light grey & black. Or something like that.
I am beginning to think I outsmarted myself by putting on the dive planes as they will get in the way of masking the hull. Perhaps I can do something with thin automobile striping ....
Anyway, something to do tomorrow ... I should work on my youTube skills and find some music ...

Looking terrific, John. Verrrrry nice. I wouldn't have the nerve, co-ordination or eyesight to tackle PE under time pressure!

I like it already. Not sure about the wisdom of a steam powered submarine, though.

Re: Mikr Mir 1/350 K-class Submarine
Good morning.
Last evening I rattle-canned the dark grey undersides, thus officially ending the first half at about 11 hours.
And here we are at the start of day, everything the same.
We'll call it a 9am start time; I've docked myself 15 minutes for forgetting to have my coffee cup in the picture.
As mentioned earlier, today I have a rather complex masking task, avoiding damage to the dive planes and prop stuff. Not sure this was the best possible plan, but it seemed like a good idea at the time ....
