From Russia with Love - Miguelito's MiG-15 FINISHED < 12 hrs

Post by mjatx »

On the spur of the moment, I decided to take a shot at Blitzing this kit. Dragon's 1/72 MiG-15, which I think is the old Italeri kit. Looks like a pretty straightforward kit, with just one main sprue, a limited part count, and a simple paint scheme.

I'm planning doing this as an East German plane. The decals look a little yellow in some places, but I think the East German choice look the least yellow. The plane will be done with rattle cans for color (silver, aluminum, grey, and some black). What better way to spend a Valentine's Day than hunched over a modeling desk ignoring the world around you?

I'm already about 40 minutes into this. The parts have limited flash, and I'm just doing some painting of the interior parts. More pictures to follow!

Woah where did this pop up from? Nice choice. I'll be checking in throughout the day. Good luck with it.

I made the mistake of cleaning off my desk and began thinking, "Well, I don't have anything planned for today, and tomorrow's a holiday (Presidents' Day in the US), so what's the harm in ignoring Mrs. Miguelito and the family for the next 24 hours.

Here's the progress so far. The cockpit tub has some unreachable molding imperfections, but once it's sealed up with a seat it should be nearly invisible.

Everything that's NOT going to be silver, got painted.

The fuselage has a less than ideal fit. It's going to take some time to get it attached, and I'm hoping not to lose too much detail when I clean up the seams.

This is a decent enough looking kit, best of luck with it.

Thanks! I apologize for the lack of updates. We went out to lunch for sandwiches (no pictures), and then when I got home, Mrs. Miguelito had the audacity to want to chat. Doesn't she realize I'm under an extreme time crunch!?!?!

Anyway, here's the progress. Forgot to get a picture of the cockpit before sealing it up, so here's the best I can do.
Image

I should have enough nose weight to keep it from tail sitting.
Image

The fuselage and wing fit is OK. I think I've still got a little work ahead of me in those areas, and in particular, the nose and underside.

Here's my time stamp about 10 minutes ago. Now it's heading out to get a coat of primer to see how much more work I have ahead of me. Hopefully, I'll be able to get it cleaned up and ready for a coat of silver before dinner.

Just spotted this one, very good progress so far. It's good to see someone else doing an East German subject. Will try to stay with you as long as I can.

Thanks, OT. This is my first East German subject, and honestly, it probably wouldn't have been my first choice if the rest of the decals were in good shape. Still there's not much difference between 6 choices of aircraft in the kit decals. They're all NMF with different insignia.

I got the primer coat sprayed. Not much to clean up, just a little around the nose and on the back of the fuselage. The wings were actually OK, and the underside turned out pretty good too.
Image

Then I sprayed a coat of Tamiya Chrome Silver.
Image

Now I'm ready to clean up a few areas, mainly the wheel wells and back of the seat, where I had a little over spray. Then it's onto decals. The kit provides wing tanks, but I don't imagine East German planes would have had much use for those, and I'd prefer to leave them off, so I will be leaving them off. I meant to tape in some black walkways after the primer went on, but I forgot. Maybe I have something passable in the spare decals kit. Otherwise, those will be left off too.

They do that don't they? Either when you are building a model or watching football!

That is looking good. Who needs walkways anyway?

It's done! Just like good old fashioned Communist style, there were no frills with this build. Just work, comrade. It still needs some Micro-Sol on the decals, and a coat of varnish overall, but I'm calling this one done.

Here's where we left off. I got it to stand on it's feet without tail sitting on the first try. I didn't think that would be a problem, since I stuffed the nose with a lot of fishing lead.
Image

By 20 after 8pm, the assembly was complete and it was ready for decals.
Image

Unfortunately, the decals weren't ready and were well past their prime. They crumbled with any effort to remove them from the backing. So, I had to dig through the spares pile. I came up with another set of decals for a MiG. Unfortunately, they were for a MiG-3, so they're not entirely accurate, but they get the point across.
Image

Image

I decided to add a little red to the rudders, and the black walkway come courtesy of part of some invasion stripping. There you have it. In just under 12 hours, you too can build yourself a little MiG-15. You just need to ignore unnecessary Western distractions like music, food, and people.
