Beany's Lastminute.com Big MiG - Revell 1/48 Foxbat

Post by beany »

Revell 1/48 Mig 25 Foxbat
Kit No.H-290 Initial release 1977
Reboxed with new decals as 04589 in 2004 and again with new decals as 85-5860 in 2010
11.5" (29.2cm) wide by 18.25" (46.4cm) long
47 build stage (including optionals) and approx 62 parts (not all used - depends on options)

I intended to join the Blitzbau fun last week but spent the entire week - including the tail end of the Huddersfield show, suffering from a common cold/chest cough virus type thing which to be honest I haven't totally shaken now. However, I am on leave all week so will Blitz this old Revell MiG which I brought from Chris of Kits Kits at Hudds for the princely (and discounted for being a UAMF member - thanks Chris) sum of £7.00
Image

I will start at midday today and run continuously until midday tomorrow. I don't expect much live support as I know many of you will be at work or school/uni. and I've given no notice whatsoever for this build so that's my fault, but it should be fun as I've thoroughly enjoyed (not completing any of) my previous Blitz's :ha:
Image

Although the kit is big is is pretty basic and has a simple colour scheme, I am hoping to complete it in the 24 hours. I'll use Tamiya paints airbrushed on for the main body as I know they dry quickly. I will choose what looks to be the nearest Greys to match as I don't think there is an exact Tamiya equivalent for the main body shade of grey. It will be an OOB build as I have neither additional bell or whistles with which to enhance this model.

Instructions and paint plan all fit on a single folded sheet of paper, just smaller than A3 size.

Right, breakfast first, then dig out the appropriate paints, then prepare work area, then let slip the dogs or war...

Cheers
Al.

How about some "barely live" support? It was a hefty weekend. Long story.

This has the advantage of a pretty simple colour scheme and it's a pre-Stencil Hell Revell..
Is this your sanderling?.

From memory, this is pretty much the same size as an Su-27. It's a big one for sure in 1/48. I have to work today - the nerve of some people - but I'll follow along when I can. I think Tamiya sky grey (XF-19) and neutral grey (XF-53) are fairly good matches for this.

OK Al. I have had that kit for years and the decals look just like yours. I will be cheering you on. If I remember right, it has a clear instrument panel that a decal is placed. Pretty cool for the day.

Musical accompaniment will be The Reality Dream DVD by Polish Prog Rock band Riverside, who tragically announced the death of their lead guitarist Piotr Grudzinski last week. I can't tell you how upset I am by this as I discovered this band only relatively recently and have been collecting their back catalogue. Piotr was only 40 and so the reason for his death has not been announced. The DVD was not easy to get and I finally tracked down a copy in Germany. RIP Piotr - an amazing guitarist.

Even if you aren't a Prog Rock/Heavy Metal fan, give the first few seconds of this video a look to see what a talent Piotr was.

Off we go then, Tamiya paints as per Flak's suggestions for the main body, and a couple of Xtracolors from my "Russian" collection.
Image

Interior first as always - I looked at several interior photos of MiG 25 but can't seem to get a "right" one, so I've gone with Xtracolor X629 Russian Interior Blue/Green - because that's the one I have in my stash!

Image

Wings and nose next. I hope the Contacta dries quickly as there are already some nasty seams that will need tidying up.

Cheers

Hopefully you're not going to need those Stanley wrecking bars hanging from the wall there, Al. Though they do make short work of drywall. And those "problem" kits. I have a Revell 1/48 Eurofighter Typhoon I might try mine on. I'll report back.

Sorry, I keep forgetting to put the phone with the time in the shot - but this was about 12:55:

Hub green on the hubs (duh?!)
Image

and the main body halves glued together - not very pretty - reckon some grievous filling and filing may be required here.
Faithful old Airfix 1/72 Gustav's taking a flypast to give an indication of the size of these parts!

13:22 now so I'm calling that lunch.

Steady as she goes. Wow, a Spitfire Mk XII coffee cup. I need to hang out on the Airfix/Hornby site more.

Back at it - tail fin halves glued and intake inners attached.
Image

and then the next 30 minutes or so tidying up and building the four pointy white things that go Whoosh then Bang! These are very basic and leave gaps that may or may not get filled later.

Coming along well. Hopefully it goes together without too many gaps to have to deal with.
