The Empire Strikes Back - VC10 K3 ZA149 - ** FINISHED **

The Kit takes shape...
Re: The Empire Strikes Back - VC10 K3
I think it's looking really good so far, and as for the messy bench, I don't think any of us have heard of a tidy one, let alone have one!
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!

Re: The Empire Strikes Back - VC10 K3
The flaps as moulded are designed to move between 'up' and a 'slightly down position. Frog restricted their movement to a very short distance and now I am discovering why.
I want the flaps pretty much fully 'down' and the one piece moulded flaps do not fit in that position! I ended up making a cut between the three outer and two inner flaps - which I believe the real VC-10 has too and that improved things a bit but the flaps still do not fit well. I tried holding them down at both ends while the glue dried but that did not work. So now I've glued down just the inboard flaps and left them to dry and hope that I can get the outboard ones to glue down later.
Yes, I know the curved sections between the flaps are way too thick but I can't fix that and from above they look OK.
Also, work is getting annoyingly in my way more than I expected this week.

Re: The Empire Strikes Back - VC10 K3
The flaps seem to have stayed glued down this time.
This is the effect I wanted.
The engines are not glued on. They will be painted separately and so will the slats. I also noticed some tiny bits of PSR needed on the fuselage then hopefully on to the paint and decals.

That's really coming together nicely and I'm sure is going to look cracking once complete!
Best wishes

Brilliant stuff. Takes me back to my days fixing VC10s for the MOD.

Thanks, gentlemen.
She's now coated with ModelMaster Acryl Grey Primer. I hope to get first colour on her today too.

Doesn't look like work getting in the way too much...looking great! Makes me sad too as I can't help missing that graceful beast in the air.

Topsides done in Gunze Hemp yesterday.
Now masked (tediousness even on a simple two colour model like this) and ready for LAG undersides. Picture shows it lying on my extension workbench aka the spare bed.

PS - I am getting really cheesed off with Photobucket opening a resource hogging pop-up in a completely new instance of Firefox every time I upload.

Shaping up nicely now Skipper, but judging by the bottom of the lower photo it looks like The Mysterons are taking an interest!dwomby wrote:Topsides done in Gunze Hemp yesterday.

Looking good with some colour on her.
I refuse to use PB now and find it so much easier to use the "Add image to post" feature at the bottom of the 'Post a reply' page.dwomby wrote:I am getting really cheesed off with Photobucket opening a resource hogging pop-up in a completely new instance of Firefox every time I upload.

Re: The Empire Strikes Back - VC10 K3
So, last night I picked this up again and carefully sanded down (600, 1200 then 1500 grit) and repainted the afflicted areas. Then I glossed it for decalling today.
Just now I went to put on the cargo door decal first and discovered that after all my careful checking, I had still managed to get the windows wrong and there's a window opening where the cargo door goes!!!!!
I think it will be OK though. I have filled it with white glue and hopefully when that dries I can paint over it and apply the decal.
the decals will be a mix from these three sheets - most recent release of the Airfix K2, Liveries Unlimited RAF VC-10 sheet and Airline Hobby Supplies VC-10 windows and doors sheet. I probably won't apply all the stencils.
