Paul's Late Seafire

Honoring Edgar Brooks, a Spitfire researcher and contributor to many modelling forums, we have the Every Mark of Spitfire GB -- in which at least one of each will be built, not in a free-for-all, but to a "plan".
The GB runs from 27 Feb 2016 to 10 April and your host are Martin R and Sir T.

Paul's Late Seafire

Post by PaulBradley »

I'll be building the new Airfix 1/48 Spitfire IA and the Hobbycraft 1/48 Seafire XV, suitably tarted up with various bits and bobs from my Spitfire Spares Yard...!

These will be the markings:

I haven't done a BPF a/c in ages, and I've not done a black/white underside 1/48 Spitfire ever - should be fun! I have a number of projects on the go at the moment, but I hope to make a start next weekend.....

Hi Paul,

Look out for the undercarriage attachments on the Airfix!

Want to see what you do with the Hobbycraft MkXV.

Martin

Other commitments are severely constricting my modeling time and I am unlikely to be able to do both. As, I think, someone' else has already offered to do another Mk.I, I am going to drop that and concentrate on the Seafire. If I have time, I will try to squeeze in the I.

Fair enough, Paul.

Keep us advised on progress.

Time to get this show on the road...!

The kit is pretty simple:

...but I'll be adding some bits from my box of 1/48 Spitfire spares:

The decals I'll be using are by Aeromaster, the late, lamented US company:

I'll be doing the second option, for 802 Sqn, 1946. I do like the BPF scheme.

...and some progress to report!

My box of Spit bits is mostly for the Mk.IX, but I was able to bring the following to the party as replacements for underwhelming kit parts: IP, resin wheels, resin exhausts, radiator housings, prop blades, cannon fairings, and an Airwaves PE set yielding a harness and various small greeblies.

Cheers, Stu!

There's something Spitfire-shaped on my workbench!

Hobbycraft kits tend to fit together quite easily and this was no exception. However, there's no dihedral to the kit's wings, so I sanded back the mating surfaces a bit, then taped up the wingtips while the glue sets - this should impart a few degrees.

That's certainly looking the part now and benefiting well from the various additions!

Nice choice of subject, but you picked the wrong choice from the decal sheet. :ha:

"These aren't the greeblies you are looking for..." ;-)

Some pre-shading and a coat of Sky on the undersides this morning:

We are going away for the weekend in about 15 minutes, so no updates until next week now. But, with the main airframe together, and few dangly bits to add, I feel very confident that I can get this done in time - I'll have two weekends.
