Paul's Late Seafire

Honoring Edgar Brooks, a Spitfire researcher and contributor to many modelling forums, we have the Every Mark of Spitfire GB -- in which at least one of each will be built, not in a free-for-all, but to a "plan".
The GB runs from 27 Feb 2016 to 10 April and your host are Martin R and Sir T.

Thanks, Toby. 8-)

Just came back from the Pima Air and Space Museum, and a Davis-Monthan boneyard tour - very cool! 8-) 8-) Only problem - no Spitfires!  ;-) (They did have a Hurricane, though)

Ugh. Was hoping to make good progress over the weekend, but I've ended up taking a step backwards instead...

Put on a nice coat of Dark Slate Grey, then masked for the EDSG. Discovered I have run out of EDSG (Too many Sea Furies...!) AND Dark Sea Grey. Nothing available in town (of course...), so I thought I'd mix my own. Looked fine in the mixing jar, but dried far too light and far too blue - more like the 'Mixed Grey' that the RAF used for a short time mid-war.... Worse, my blutak masking pulled up some of the DSG. So, now I have to strip off both camo colours, probably ruining the Sky undersides as well, and start again.

Most unhappy.

Ah yes, the joys of modelling :-D

I'm sure you'll get it all sorted out but it sounds frustrating.

Good luck with it.

Cheers, guys. I'll have to deal with it next weekend now. I have other projects I can get on with in the meantime.

Aaaaahhh, that's better:

New mix of EDSG looks much better. But I've lost a whole week. Luckily, there isn't much left to do - add the dangly bits, coat with Future, then decals and another Future coat. Should easily be able to get it done in time.

Cheers, David. The DSG is Xtracrylix, thinned with alcohol and sprayed with a Paasche H at 15-20 psi... ;-)

With the EDSG, I tried a new-to-me method - scribbling a slightly lighter version over the top, and then another slightly lighter again one over that. Gives a slight random patchiness that looks pretty effective, though it doesn't show up too well in the photo.

Anything looks good in TSS, but Seafires look particularly good.

How did you mask the DSG when applying the EDSG or was it freehand?

Blutak for the topsides and Tamiya tape to mask off the hard edges for the Sky undersides. Blutak gives just the right amount of overspray to create those soft edges.

That's very effective and looks spot on.
