Martin's Seafire Ib *finished* & PRs IV & XI *finished*

Honoring Edgar Brooks, a Spitfire researcher and contributor to many modelling forums, we have the Every Mark of Spitfire GB -- in which at least one of each will be built, not in a free-for-all, but to a "plan".
The GB runs from 27 Feb 2016 to 10 April and your host are Martin R and Sir T.

Martin's Seafire Ib *finished* & PRs IV & XI *finished*

Post by Martin R »

So, I'm gathering materials: the PRIV is a Sword kit and will be built oob; the PRXI is a cross kit involving the Airfix Mks IX and XIX using the bits left over from a previous MkXIV cross kit.

I thought I'd have a problem sourcing the Seafire, though. Never fear! A rummage in the stash turned up the old Airfix FAA club kit with a Seafire IIC in it. In reality, this is the old Spit MkVb with updated wings for the MkVc. You remember: the pre-Hornby chunky stuff! However, the original wings are there, together with bits for the hook recess and hook. Using these bits should give me a Ib. Sorted!

Regards,

Martin

I do all my posting by phone - I use the photobucket app and the camera phone - whilst not great for completed shots it's ok for wip - just switch the flash off and watch the wb and light.

Fair enough. I'll give it a try then.

No progress, I'm afraid. Decided to watch Trapped instead.

However, as I appear to have sussed out how to upload photos on the mobile, I'll try to show some photos of the kits tonight. While rummaging in the stash, I found a freightdog PRXI resin conversion for the MkXIX, so I have another option for the MkXI as well as my IX/ XIX cross kit.

OK, here are some photos: firstly, the PRIV from Sword. Very like the Seafire kits I've previously made. Only problem will be using the extended wingtips, necessitating a razor saw job, followed by judicious filling.

Next, we have the Seafire Ib:

using the old Spit Vb kit plus some of the bits from the Airfic Club boxing of the Seafire IIc.

I'll put the PRXI pics in my next post.

Right, the Spit PRXI choices:

Firstly, the IX XIX cross kit option:

I have added a resin seat and pointed tailfin, but would still need to scratch the bulged chin.

Alternatively, I could use the Freightdog conversion for the Airfix XIX:

This will entail some cutting and filling, but the bulged chin is part of the resin cowling. Decisions, decisions. Maybe, I'll try both!

Um... correct me if I'm wrong but I'd do the IX & XIX cross kit and then use the XIX conversion nose on the mk.IX fuselage? Surely that would work as the rest of the fuselage rear of the firewall is the same length? - or am I missing something?

That way you'd have the XIX fuselage intact to mate with the IX wings? - delete the pressurized cockpit - what would that make?

Cheers

One of these....

I did my XI with a IX fuselage and XIX wing then scratched the nose and added underwing cameras a fuel tank and broard chord rudder.

Hi folks,

Already done a XIV!

http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=565&start=45.

The cross-kit has only the bits left over from that build (ie XIX wing / IX fuse). Might as well use those for a PRXI (waste not / want not), but I've got the very nice Freightdog PRXI set for the XIX base kit too . . .

regards,

Martin

Cool build Martin.

I still think I'd use the bits left over AND the XIX conversion set (the nose anyway) to make your PR.XI.

Then you'd have a nice shiny XIX kit intact for future use :)
