OT's Mk.XIV duo *** Finished ***

Honoring Edgar Brooks, a Spitfire researcher and contributor to many modelling forums, we have the Every Mark of Spitfire GB -- in which at least one of each will be built, not in a free-for-all, but to a "plan".
The GB runs from 27 Feb 2016 to 10 April and your host are Martin R and Sir T.

The inspection hatch has been filled and the spine sanded into submission thus obliterating all that lovely detail. It does look better than the kit part but is a lot of work to make it fit.
My recommendation if you want a high back Spitfire XIV is to use the AZ kit: http://www.model-making.eu/products/Bri ... .XIVe.html
The Quickboost resin nose cowling is a great fit though but is not essential as with care the kit one is good enough.

Anyway, onto my progress or lack there of. I've just returned to work last week after a 3 month lay off through illness and I must admit I've been too tired to do much modelling once I get home.
I spent a lot of time blending in the wing tips as they are a little over-sized.

Still, it's easier to remove plastic than add it.

So this is where I am at the moment.

Next up fit the radiators and air scoop on the underside and fit cannon barrels then prime and see what they look like.

Glad you are on the mend OT; hopefully you'll re-acclimatise to work quickly and will feel a bit more like modelling soon!

Both Spits are coming along nicely though none the less!
Best wishes

Jim

Slow progress on these two. Since my last update I have:
  • fitted the radiators, air scoop and cannons to both.
Applied a primer coat to both.
Filled, sanded and corrected any errors
Applied a top coat of Humbrol 30 from a rattle can.
Apologies as I thought I had taken pics but I can't find them! So this is where I am at:

From this point on the builds will diverge. The Belgium high back Spitfire (on the right) will have RAF Ocean Grey applied as the second camoflage colour whilst the Indian example will have RAF Dark Earth applied as the second camoflage colour. They will both have Medium Sea Grey undersides.

More to follow. :smilie_flagge3:

Thanks Daz.

I have applied the 2nd camo colour to my Spits. Broke off one of the wing tips too but a quick repair sorted that.

As a bit of an experiment I used a mask made of Tamiya tape for the Grey\Green example. Whilst time consuming I found it very therapeutic and the hard edged camo came out really well.
On the Indian Air Force Brown\Green scheme I used roles of white-tak and sprayed very close to the surface. That was much faster but not quite as sharp and I have a little over spray to touch up.
Hopefully a coat of Klear will even out the paint work.

So, 'To do' list for tonight:
  • Dip canopies in Klear
    Mask and paint undersides
    Paint undercarriage
Looks like these two at least will be completed on time. 8-)

Interesting to see the results of the different masking techniques side-by-side. Thanks for that.

We all like a fine looking pair don't we? :ha:
Time for a quick update on these two.

Since I last updated I've spent some time on the interiors. On the low back Spitfire I had to repaint the IP after the decal peeled away when I removed the tissue paper that I had covered it in during the painting process.
I also filled in the hole behind the pilot that Fujimi left empty. Seat belts were added too and the canopy attached.
A couple of coats of Klear then time for decals. WRONG! :???:
I had planed to use the kit supplied white decals for the wing bands but they had yellowed somewhat & had the flexibility of leather!

So, plan 'B' - paint them on. A bit time consuming but a few thin coats of Tamiya white should do the trick. I don't want them to look too new so I may rub them down a bit later. Will see what they look like but I can't imagine they would stay clean for long in a muddy Indian monsoon or dusty Indian summer. :)
So this is where I am up to:

Image

White has been applied since this was taken. I'll upload some images later once the paint is dry.

So to the Belgium Spitfire. Once again the interior needed some work so I added a frame and head rest behind the pilot as once again nothing is supplied in the kit. :frown:
Seat harness installed and the canopy attached. Two coats of Klear and decals are going on. :-D

Image

Those are bright. 8-)

Still need to make the camera openings in the fuselage sides wihich will be filled with PVA to simulate the glass.

Next up work on the U\C and unfortunately I will have to use the kit supplied props (which are pants!) as I have ran out of Aeroclub ones. Are Aeroclub still in business?

Those Belgian markings are really going to look cool, OT.

Yes, Aeroclub is still in business but John has a more limited range nowadays and many older items are no longer available. The only way to reach him is via a PM on Britmodeller.com where he is 'John Aero'.

Thanks David. I got in touch with John but no joy I'm afraid. The kit props will have to do for now.
