Last but One and Last but Two: F45 & FR46 *BOTH FINISHED*

Honoring Edgar Brooks, a Spitfire researcher and contributor to many modelling forums, we have the Every Mark of Spitfire GB -- in which at least one of each will be built, not in a free-for-all, but to a "plan".
The GB runs from 27 Feb 2016 to 10 April and your host are Martin R and Sir T.

Just had a mess up with the paint. My first time with Xtracrylix. I've posted separately asking what I did wrong here http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=13601.

Meanwhile, I cleaned it off the Seafires and used Vallejo Air EDSG with no problems so far.

I would like to know how to use Xtracrylix as it's the only Dark Slate Grey I have on hand for the F46.

Agreed!

And yours is looking great too David!

I still use Humbrol sky - no idea if its accurate but I like the colour!

The F45 is pulling ahead of the F46 at the moment. It's painted, unmasked, touched up a bit.

Also now has its radiators fitted. Unfortunately they needed filler so more paint touch up to come.

Here are the homemade decals for it too.

The F46 looks really good in just EDSG uppers down to the bottom of the fuselage and I am tempted to change the markings I use to one in that scheme rather than putting Dark Slate Grey camo on it. Still mulling that one over.

Change of plan on the F46: it's back to an FR46. I like the ESDG/Sky combination too much to add Dark Slate Grey camo over it and I'm having too much trouble doing the struts for the drop tank that LA545 110/CH carried, so it's going to be LA550 045/FD. By all accounts that one was only EDSG topsides. There is some controversy over it supposedly having B Type roundels on upper wings but unless one of you can produce a photo proving that, mine is having C Type roundels there.

Camera ports drilled today (hopefully no slivers end up showing in the cockpit).

They're looking absolutely fantastic, David!

I particularly like the home made decals with surface detail. That'll look really effective.

Apologies that it's taken me so long to reply about how I prevent canopies being fogged when I spray matt varnish. I use blu tack to mask them off, shaping edges neatly with a cocktail stick. Simple as!

I hope you didn't expire mid-sentence there for any bad reason, Martin :-)

No, must have posted prematurely. Thought I had deleted by mistake.

Brilliant. Thanks. Why can't I think of clever stuff like that?

The F45 decalling (is there such a verb?) has started. A few minor glitches but it's turning out OK, I think.

The FR46 contraprop has me wishing I'd adopted the 'show only a spinner and no blades' approach to in-flight prop planes - 6 blades to paint the silly yellow tips on! I also just noticed the one I am modelling LA550 045/FD had no arrestor wire deflector in front of the tailwheel. So I have to pull off my carefully scratchbuilt one or pick a different airframe to model!

One down and one to go.

Here's the F45. Apart from the roundels, all the decals are homemade. I topcoated it with SemiGloss MM Acryl clear and loved how it went on straight from the bottle at 15psi.

I decided not to weather either Seafire as they both look pretty well scrubbed in the pics I have. I suppose in the immediately postWW2 period, the Royal Navy had lots of spare hands to keep these machines clean. Also, I must admit, I'm not very good at it.

Sorry for the not-so-great pics. I had camera challenges today.

Thanks again to Kitaholic for the rudder!!!

The FR46 decals are in progress and it too should be finished for tomorrow.
