Lancfan's Spitfire Vb Floatplane

Honoring Edgar Brooks, a Spitfire researcher and contributor to many modelling forums, we have the Every Mark of Spitfire GB -- in which at least one of each will be built, not in a free-for-all, but to a "plan".
The GB runs from 27 Feb 2016 to 10 April and your host are Martin R and Sir T.

Lancfan's Spitfire Vb Floatplane

Post by lancfan »

Now that my buccaneer is finished (I just have to take the gallery shots and write the final report this afternoon) I can begin on this, I will use the Airfix Mk Vb kit 02046 and floats modified from PM kit pm-216 and will start work later this afternoon.

I'll be interested to see how this goes together as I have the Brengun kit of the same subject.

I have the full PM kit, and one day will feel brave enough to weld it together......

Watching with interest!

My mark VII is about to be painted so to fill in the drying times work will begin here soon with the cockpit.

With the Mark VII being painted the time had come to work on this model, the first job was to dig out my Miliput cockpit moulds to make a set of Das clay skins to glue to the inside of the fuselage, this shot shows the moulds alongside the rough parts which were ready for thinning down and trimming.
Image

The inside faces of the cockpit area were now thinned down to accept the new Das Clay cockpit which had previously been thinned down ready to be fitted, this picture shows the thinned cockpit halves with one skin cyanoed in place.

The cockpit area was then painted.

Moving on to the wings, the wheelbays were filled with car filler before assembly to form a solid base for the float fairings, the wing halves were then assembled and left to dry.

Clever idea for the cockpit. Do you have an explanation of your mould-making process somewhere, David?

The cockpit was completed with the seat and control column.
Image

The wing and fuselage were joined together.
Image

The fin was then modified to match the floatplane layout.
Image

The basic airframe was then completed, the model is now ready for the floats to be fitted when it can then be painted.

Nice work David, I like the trick you used to fill the wheel wells.
