Lancfan's Seafire FR. 47 ***Finished***

Honoring Edgar Brooks, a Spitfire researcher and contributor to many modelling forums, we have the Every Mark of Spitfire GB -- in which at least one of each will be built, not in a free-for-all, but to a "plan".
The GB runs from 27 Feb 2016 to 10 April and your host are Martin R and Sir T.

Lancfan's Seafire FR. 47 ***Finished***

Post by lancfan »

Now that my buccaneer is finished (I just have to take the gallery shots and write the final report this afternoon) I can begin on this, I will use the Airfix Mk 22 kit A02033 with decals from Xtradecal sheet X72135 and will start work later this afternoon.

Welcome aboard David - looking forward to seeing this one.

What do you need to convert to get from a .22 to a .47?

First, the box and sprue shot, from checking out the plans this is not that difficult and will make a fairly straightforward conversion.

With two models done and the third well on the way now is the time to move this model onto the bench.

With the mark III finished and the floatplane well on the way to completion it is now time to move this model onto the bench. work begins by pre-painting the cockpit, drilling out the camera ports (as marked inside the fuselage) and cutting away the vestigial tail under the rudder and removing the entry door, the cockpit assembly was then built up.
Image

As this went on I scribed the wing fold lines in the wing halves and joined the wings together and then joined up the fuselage halves, the chin intake was then made up using car filler applied under the nose, this was then sanded/filed to shape and then flicked off to file away the inside of the chin to form the intake, this was then cyano'ed back in place under the nose and the wing was joined to the fuselage.

The tailplanes, rudder and radiators were then fitted, the model is now almost ready for paint.

Great work. Interesting that the fuselage has the camera ports marked inside. I wonder what Airfix have planned for this mould? I see the pencil marks on the wings. Do you plan to scribe the folds or actually cut the wings and model them folded?

I have only scribed them David, I don't really like the sleeping bat look of folded wings.

David.
I like the idea of folding wings, they're great for storage in any size, but they do tend to hide the model, especially around the cockpit on prop jobs. I like to do one folded and one unfolded if I do them. Sorry, just my 2p's worth!

To make the contra-props I used the spinner from the Frog Spitfire mk14 kit with blades cut from Frog/Revell Shackleton parts.
Image

That done I began to paint the basic airframe starting with grey primer.
Image

The first colour to go down was Sky.
Image

Ex. Dk Sea Grey was the next colour to be applied.
Image

To busy up the undersides I fitted a 90gallon slipper tank and bomb racks from the spares box.
Image

Decals and varnish were then applied.
Image
Image

The model was then ready for final assembly, I began by fitting the canopy, to form the curved windscreen I used Glue'n'glaze over the kit part, when dry it had done the job quite well.
Image
Image

The undercarriage, propeller, arrestor hook and bombs were now fitted.
Image
Image

The model was now finished, I have to say that I enjoyed this build most of all.
