Chips A10 Warthog ***Finished***
I will be building a good old tank busting "Warthog".
It will be built OOB, but I have not yet decided on a scheme. The two schemes that come with it are OK but fairly plain, not a grinning snake or shark in sight. The kit was originally to be built as part of the Gulf War GB but I ran out of time doing two other builds, so I may use the scheme I had in mind for that and paint on my own nose artwork. Decisions, decisions.....

Re: Chips A10 Warthog
Good choice Molly, I'm in with a hog myself. It is the Tamiya kit but again the camo schemes are a bit plain.

Cool, it will be interesting to see the differences between the two.

Re: Chips A10 Warthog
Started by painting up the cockpit and pilot:
Choice of scheme is between Gulf War version and painting the nose art myself (daunting):
Or the JAWS version (just plain dotty) :
Tactical tests of the A-10 and Army attack and observation helicopters became the "Joint Attack Weapons System" or JAWS.
During the tests, Air Force Aggressor pilots reported that the A-10's light gray camouflage scheme made the Warthog easily visible from above. At Nellis AFB, the 57th Tactical Training Wing assumed the responsibility for developing terrestrial camouflage schemes. Four aircraft were given an overall coat of tan, green, or gray, then sprayed and brushed with spots of three or four other earth tones. Two of the camouflages were evaluated at JAWS II in November 1977. The scheme's developers had plans for repaint kits to accompany deploying units, changing the spots on aircraft as geographical conditions required, but by September 1978 Nellis was developing what became the European I scheme, and the spotted camouflages became a minor, though well-remembered, camouflage oddity.

Re: Chips A10 Warthog
Progress report now I can get on the computer. First the cockpit was fitted into the fuselage with a bolt for weight:
The fuselage was then buttoned up and the other sub assemblies put together;
and finally all put together:
The overall fit has been very good so far, just a bit of work needed on the wing roots.

Re: Chips A10 Warthog
Looks very good so far. Never given this kit a second glance but it looks a lot better than I expected

Re: Chips A10 Warthog
That looks really good; any decision on the scheme yet?
Best wishes

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Re: Chips A10 Warthog
Time at the bench has been extremely difficult to find of late, but I have been able to get the bomb pylons fitted:
There are some awkwardly placed ejector marks on the undercarriage doors that need filling:
It will be a struggle to get this finished on time but will certainly give it a good go.

Re: Chips A10 Warthog
All parts together and primed ready for painting:
With the time constraints that I am working under I have decided to go with the European 1 scheme, I will add the nose art if time alows at the end.

Re: Chips A10 Warthog
Painting progressing nicely with all three colours added to the main frame followed by a coat of klear ready for the decals:
All the bombs and undercarriage parts have been painted up and are ready for fitting so I should get this finished tonight.

Re: Chips A10 Warthog
Looks the part, for sure. I'm thinking the camo scheme would have been quite effective on a low flying aircraft over a forest area. Well done.
