Fred's GR5 **DNF**

Post by fredk »

Time for me to put my kit up.
I've no box for this, I can't remember why. This has been stored in a clear food container for far too long.

Looks like a lot more parts for the spares box. The canopy and a couple of loose parts are still in the box.

I thought I didn't have the decals for this but I found them in with a GR7 kit, and its decals were in my files.
I have Xtradecals to do this one of 1 Squadron:

The kit decals are needed for the stencils;

I hope to get started on this on Thursday or Friday.

How many noses? Must be a record for the number of options available in one kit.

I think 4 noses in all for two RAF and two USMC versions.

I built this kit and did the 1 Sqn winter camo version a couple of years ago. With the spray on white, you can't see a lot of the stencilling

Looking forward to watching this as I actually worked on ZD378 although by that time it was a Mk.7. 8-)

Those sprues look almost identical to the GR7 boxing I have.

oh, boy, no pressure then.....

They're the same kit, just a different nose and one or two other parts which are all included on the sprues.

I finally have something to show.

Yesterday, a few hours of gluing, filling and sanding, then the wings put on;
Image
The wings needed an elastic band to hold them tight on to make them fit. This kit comes with one set of inserts for the auxiliary intake doors, they aren't flush, nor dropped. I filed the top ones for dropped doors, and put some fillers on the lower ones to bring them up flush.

Another day of fettling, filling and sanding;

I don't have the kit ejection seat so I had to dig out a spare resin one and fettle it to fit.

Since these photos the u/c bays, doors, airbrake interior etcetera have been painted white.

Quick progress on this!

Excuse me if I'm being thick but whose kit is this?
Best wishes

No, you are not being thick. It does appear I have failed to say who's kit it is.
Its the old Airfix Harrier GR5.
I hope to get a bit more done on this this evening.

Nice work so far. You've taken quite a different approach to me with arming it early in the build. I tend to leave that stuff till last.

It's looking good Fred, I have the same kit in the GR7 box.

That's interesting that the kits supplied Axillary air intakes aren't closed or part closed, but to be fair I would rather manufactures supplied them like this rather than all fully closed.

Airfix obviously learnt because their later kits all include the options to have the intakes in several different positions.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Two coats of Humbrol 120 on the underneath for the Lichen Green
Image

Now to mask up part for the dark green topside

The kit's Aden gun pods are rather plain so I used a far better pair from an Airfix Sea Harrier FRS1.

Great to see this older Airfix GR5/7 being built. Looks a better fit than I expected. Nice job.
