OT Builds a Cheetah *** Finished ***

A simple GB, convert one thing to another - any subject, any scale, any era, any method, but ending up with a different variant, than what the bits provide for in the box.
GB runs 16th April to 29th May and your host is Martin R.

Sorry for the lack of updates chaps. Real life getting in the way lately!

I have been doing little bits when I can such as IRP, wing fences and various lumps etc. Also the primer coat identified some issues so I tidied up those. Then another coat of primer and a first for me some pre-shading. Not sure this is worth the effort but I had some black in the airbrush so I gave it a go.

Image

Just about to give her a coat of the light grey. We may yet be finished before the deadline.

First coat of light grey went on fine and shows the pre-shading (perhaps a little too much! :???: ). I want her to look worn but air worthy.
Next I mark out the pattern with white tak using reference photos to get as near the original as possible. A quick repair to the port canard is required. :-|

Image

A short while later that darker blue\grey is applied and the white tak removed.
Image

That will do the job. Annoyingly I have knocked off the small wing fence on the starboard side so will have to make another.
You can see where it was just next to the wing dogtooth that I have broken the end off. :frown: I wonder if it came away with the white tak?
This build is fighting me all the way. Pitot tube has gone too.

I still need to figure out how to simulate the radar warning receivers or 'Cats Balls' as they were known in the SAAF.

Image

There should be two on the tail and another pair on the nose just forward of the cockpit. I wonder if I could shape some sprue to fit?

Anyway whils I ponder that I'd best get on with the U\C and missiles. More to follow. :smilie_flagge3:

Not sure this will work but small drops of PVA often seem to end up drying like little half spheres.

Depends how much work you want to do for the balls.
Some thoughts;
1. Drill out the spot and glue on a tiny ball bearing
2. Drill out the area, insert a bit of sprue carefully rounded on the end
3. Heat stretch some sprue, hold a bit towards the side of the flame, it will melt back forming a lens shape [not the best]
4. Round something the right size,to the right shape, stick into some milliput to make a hollow. Do #3, and as the spue melts shove into the hollow. Withdraw after a few seconds and it'll be shaped like the hollow.
Al speling misteaks aer all mi own werk..
Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Maybe some round pin heads would do for the balls?

Thanks for the ideas guys. Fred, you are assuming I have some ability working with plastic.

I think I will go with David's ideas and try PVA. "just enough to fool the eye" is my working motto.

Been having some real testing issues with these decals. Mav decals need a coat of varnish over them before use. So last night I sprayed some Humbrol gloss over them ready for a decalling session this afternoon. Unfortunately the decals seem to have dissolved somewhat.

Not all of them though? The main castle decals and stencilling looks ok whilst the cheetah logo and aircraft number have had it:

And now to confound things one of the larger castles is refusing to lift off the backing paper. :frown:
Whilst the smaller one will not conform to the curve of the air intake.

Why do I build subjects that need cottage industry decals?

Oh well, I will press on an see what can be done.

That's a shame, OT. The Humbrol gloss must be a fairly 'hot' chemical. I've used Future (Klear) successfully and Testors make a spray cam of decal fixative that's readily available over here. They both work well.

Can you still buy replacements from MAV?

I have really enjoyed this GB despite this kit. I've learned a few new methods of working along the way so thanks for organising this Martin.

Your pre-shading experiment has turned out very well. It just barely shows, and that's the way it should be. Good looking colors too. Well done.
