Arc's 'Big Fella'

A simple GB, convert one thing to another - any subject, any scale, any era, any method, but ending up with a different variant, than what the bits provide for in the box.
GB runs 16th April to 29th May and your host is Martin R.

Arc's 'Big Fella'

Post by Arcwelder »

I'm probably being ambitious miles beyond my skill, but I've been itching to try this.

Plan is to convert this

Which is to say, a Martinsyde F.4 fighter to a Type A Mk.II Four-passenger transport.

This was the first aircraft of the IAC. In brief, ahead of the 1921 treaty negotiations in London to end the Irish War of Independence there was considerable distrust of Lloyd George's plans. The negotiating team headed by Michael Collins (The Big Fella himself) feared that they might be detained in London or even arrested. Therefore, in early 1921 Irish agents secretly purchased the Type A from the ADC and had it fuelled and ready at an airfield outside London in case a quick getaway was needed.
In the end it wasn't required and was shipped to Ireland in parts and reassembled. It was named "The Big Fella" and used as a transport aircraft. In 1926 it was renamed "City of Dublin" and was broken up in 1937. Only four were ever built by Martinsyde as they adapted unused F.4s.

There are plenty of schematic drawings for both types on the webz and also lots of very good detail photos and drawings, esp. from Flight magazine. Quite a lot of work required, though.

I haven't had time to scale the drawings yet, but among other things:

Fuselage lengthening and repositioning of cockpit further aft.
Building the passenger compartment fore of the cockpit
Lengthening wings spanwise (and maybe chordwise) and changing to a two bay
Rudder adaptation
Whatever else I can find.

There is, to the best of my knowledge, no model of a Type A MkII available so this is the only way to build an iconic aircraft of the IAC.

Destruction will begin in a week or so...
Is this your sanderling?.

Life (and University) got in the way of this... I'm going to commence work shortly, but chances are it won't get done in the GB time limit. No harm, once I gird up my loins to get it going, it'll get there in the end

Looking forward to seeing this one - not to say seeing you with girded loins too!
