Splash goes from Belfast to Southampton
I'm going to attempt to convert the Airfix 1/600 scale HMS Belfast into the HMS Southampton, this is going to take me totally out of my comfort zone as I don't do ships or conversations.
As you can see from my drawing it's going to take some drastic scratch building and a reduction in the ships length

My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Chop about 12 mm out of the middle and ignore the slightly reduced beam of the Southampton (only a mm). Should be fun.

Well, I don't see a spotter plane on the Southhampton, so there's that much less rigging to do. Looks like a neat project...glad to see you take it on.

More like stupidity I think I might have bitten off more than I can chew perhaps I should just build a starfix kit insteadDazzled wrote:Ambitious. I like it

If there's a bookie in town, a thousand beans will be plunked down on your success, even though the odds are a-ginnit. It's a really cool project idea.splash wrote: I think I might have bitten off more than I can chew

Re: Splash goes from Belfast to Southampton
Looking at the kit the first problem I can see is the deck layout and the large armour that Belfast had but Southampton didn't. The question is how will I be able to remove the armour?
I'm thinking fill the hull with resin or car filler then sand the armour off. As for the decks I think I might use the kits parts as a template and scratch build blank decks.

Re: Splash goes from Belfast to Southampton
Not being particularly nautically inclined, I have no idea what you're talking about. If you could supply some pictures of the offending bits that need to come off, I might be able to come up with some appropriately wild idea though. I would be very carefull with filling anything with car filler; fillers contain solvents, and large amounts will weaken and collapse any plastic wall (learned that the hard way; one too many blobified nose cone in my background )splash wrote:Looking at the kit the first problem I can see is the deck layout and the large armour that Belfast had but Southampton didn't. Some resins could be just as bad, although PU should be fine - somewhat inclined to escaping through the smallest cracks though, so be careful you don't end up with resin everywhere except where you wanted it.
