General Rocket builds a Porsche

A simple GB, convert one thing to another - any subject, any scale, any era, any method, but ending up with a different variant, than what the bits provide for in the box.
GB runs 16th April to 29th May and your host is Martin R.

General Rocket builds a Porsche

Post by general rocket »

In May 1942 Henschel and Porsche where asked to submit proposals for a design for a 45 ton heavy tank mounting ab 88mm gun, mounted in a turret supplied by Krupp. The Porsche design lost out mainly due to unreliability.
Image
I was unable to find much in the way of usable pictures on the web, but what I have will be adequate to tell me what I need to know. The Bergepanzer Tiger was the next step in the evolution, so with minimal alteration to the hull supplied by Dragon, will form the basis of the model. The turret will come from the Airfix Tiger, partly because its simple and basic, and partly because its cheap.

Should make for an unusual looking model, with the turret so far forward.

a Porsche with an engine in the rear, who would have ever thought that would happen? :ha: :ha: :ha:
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

And they had reliability problems. Who would have thunk?

Avoiding these very Poor'sche jokes.
Image
The parts for the hull laid out.
The original top plate has been cut just behind the crew apertures, and the apertures filled, It will then be glued into position. As the centre of the top plate is a fatter than the bergepanzer, I have cut the Airfix Tiger's top plate to size and shape. Behind that, the radiator grill from the Bergepanzer will be used. The rear sloping plate is being modified from the top plate in the Bergepanzer kit.

The Airfix turret waiting construction.
This work, plus pictures should be complete tomorrow.

General,

How's it going? I know nuffin' about tanks, but this looks like a bit of a challenge. Looking forward to seeing more.

Slower than anticipated. Doesn't help that my maths was slightly out.
Update and honesty shortly.

On it right now. Nothing a bit of filler and a bit of bluffing won't cure.

First job on the hull is the removal of the plates highlighted in orange.
Image
The turret went together so well that the small amount of filler used hardly shows (front left as you view it).
The hull. The front plates are as Dragon intended. The top is a mishmash. The front part is cut from the Dragon top plate, and the apertures filled. The brown part is from the Airfix kit and cut to size.
Image
The rear sloping plate is cut from the rear crew compartment, and the hole filled with plastic card.
Image
So far, so good.
The next installment will cover how I got it wrong.

The cover above the engine is cut from the original top plate from the dragon kit.
The original prototype did not have the centre aperture above engine, but I reasoned that extra cooling may have been required, so decided to leave it as is. I have since changed my mind and will remove it.
A test fit. The Airfix plate fell a bit short, so a spacer was fitted.
Image
The radiator cover sat a bit high, so the hull was filed down until it sat correctly.
Image
Filed. glued and filled, she now sits correctly.
A test fit of the turret showed that it sat too far back. Compare with the diagram behind. I'm not entirely sure what I did wrong. Apparently I forgot to subtract the cabin cover from the main top plate.
Image
I turned the turret upside down an correctly positioned it by eye, then drilled a new hole. Most model companies use an aperture that is more to scale, fortunately Airfix don't, so it was an easy fix. A quick measure of the distance between the holes seems to confirm that I forgot to subtract the cabin cover plate.
Image
The turret in it's correct position. The stowage bin is from the spares box, panzer 3, probably.
Image
The rear grill was fashioned from a grill at the rear of the Airfix Tiger. It was cut out, trimmed and filed to a much closer thickness.
Image
The grill in place.
Image
That's it so far.

Comments and criticism welcome.

The removal of the centre radiator completed. Nothing more clever than filing, filling, filing and wet"n"dry.
Image
The addition of the suspension arms.
Image
A quick coat of ModelColor Black Grey has been applied as a base coat to the places that will be unreachable when built. Next stage is a bit of light weathering. The intention is to give the rest of the tank a base coat and then a topcoat of Miniature Paints Dark Grey.

Comments and criticism welcome.
