Tom's Cold War Warriors

Post by TomW »

I thought it was time to open up a thread so I can show the progress I'm making on a few of my Cold War builds. First up is an old build that has been hanging around my shelf of doom for a few years; An Emhar F-94 Starfire. Like I said this was part built at a time when I didn't worry about nose weight and other things that I wouldn't dream of overlooking today, so the first job is to cut off the nose with a razor saw like thus:

Image

I filled it up with plenty of squashed airgun pellets and reattached it as neatly as possible:

Image#

I'll move on to filling and sanding the airframe next. It'll need to be as smooth as I can get it as these were finished in natural metal  . As a kit though it is quite simple but looks the part; good job really as the two Emhar kits are the only game in town when it comes to 1/72.

Next up on the bench is this:

Image

The ex-Pantera kit reboxed by many others including Mastercraft as my example is. I'm actually going to do another one of these in the Lesser Known Forces GB so I'm treating this as a practise run to help me identify any pitfalls or problem areas. Its not a modern superkit by any stretch of the imagination and I know it has some accuracy issues (apparently has features of both the M3 and M4 but doesn't really represent either of them) but apart from the very expensive Modelsvit kits (which I really really want :-D ) there aren't a lot of options in 1/72 as with a lot of Soviet hardware. The box art-work above shows a natural metal finish which is provided as one of the options in the box but I'll be doing the one on the side of the box as it is a machine deployed in 1982 to Afganistan:

Image

The best approach seems to be to treat it as a short-run kit and trim / test fit everything. This was the progress so far this morning:

Image

Image

The fit is marginal as the last photo shows but nothing that can't be solved with plasticard, filler and a bit of elbow grease :ha: The instructions provide colour callouts in several ranges including FS and Humbrol; some of the paints are no longer produced but luckily I have them in my collection:

Image

A nice touch is that there is a mechanism for swinging the wings, as a bonus it actually works  :

More as I get time to work on them.

Nice choice Tom!
I have both SU-7 and SU-22 Fitters in the stash awaiting the workbench.
I need to get the Sunderland and Vulcan ready for Hinckley first though to fill up the table a little.

Thanks guys  I've got plenty more of the more unusual and lesser seen Cold War antagonists to work on throughout the year so I'll try and keep you all up to date.

So, new theme for 2016 and new builds to do for it  These are the two I am going to start with:

Like Shaun I bought them from Kingkit for very reasonable prices and a quick look inside shows two lovely detailed kits (which I'll show you all once I start).

So finally a day off to myself and what better way to spend it than by working on a small scale British Army icon? The Revell kit is one of their little gems with lots of detailed parts spread across three sprues:

Image

Image

The instruction booklet is one of their less than impressive recycled newspaper efforts but is still clear and easy enough to follow with two marking options included. One is from BATUS (British Army Training Unit Suffield) the Army's Canadian training and live fire range from 1996 - so of no use to us. The other is for the 1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards based in Germany in 1988 and this is the one I'll be doing:

Image

30 minutes easy work gave me these subassemblies:

Image

And another 15 left it looking like this:

Image

Pretty much ready for paint already

Nice one Tom. That Revell Warrior is a nifty looking bit of braille scale armour.

Thanks guys  good news at last because my modelling mojo has stirred again this week and I've made a bit of progress on some Cold War builds.

The Warrior has some paint on at last:

Image

Image

I'm currently batch painting road wheels and tracks a this will be the next step. Whilst things are drying I've started work on the Kirov Class by laying down the keel and hull:

Image

I didn't realise until I did some background research that these Soviet monsters were the main reason behind the reactivation of the US Iowa Class battleships in the early 80's. So it only seems fitting that I build one of those to go with the Kalinin:

Image

And the two together to give an idea of respective sizes, which goes to show how deceptive the hull form of the Kirov Class is and also why they deserve the classification of Battlecruiser:

Image

I need to track down some PE for these two before too long or it'll be a real anchor ( :ha: ) to my progress.

Lots going on here!

What scale & make is the Kalinin and it's US counterpart?
Best wishes

They're both 1/700th Trumpeter kits Iggie. I'd love to do them in 1/350th but they'd be way too big.

I have New Jersey in 1/350 and it is a tad on the large side!

Looking forward to seeing progress on both of these!
