Re: Shaun's Cold War Builds
Cheers Stu. It took a few hours to make that Hoffman, with bits of plastic rod flying into hyperspace and/or sticking to me or the tweezers and I questioned my sanity on more than one occasion. I very nearly gave up on it but finally managed to make it look something like. I did, however, draw the line at attempting to drill out 17 tiny diameter barrels!

Re: Shaun's Cold War Builds
In the last post of 2015 for these builds, I have now applied an initial coat of Tamiya XF-67 NATO Green by airbrush with the paint being thinned using Tamiya X-20A, a tried and trusted combination which I find works well:
I will now have to check photo references, I know the German vehicle will have a three colour scheme of NATO Green, NATO Brown and NATO Black but the Dutch vehicle I am less sure about and think it might end up being in the single NATO Green scheme. I'll check tomorrow if I'm not too hungover!
Thanks for looking and all the best to you for 2016.

The pair look excellent! Your detailing has busied up the already good moulded detail wonderfully!

Re: Shaun's Cold War Builds
And the first post of 2016 on these builds and a happy New Year to you all.
This afternoon I applied the remainder of the camo colours to the German vehicle. Paints are all Tamiya, namely, NATO Brown, NATO Green and NATO Black, all thinned with Tamiya X-20A Thinner. The camo pattern was airbrushed freehand although between you, me and the gatepost, the demarcations between the colours should strictly speaking be hard edged. Given the amount of detail that I've added, that wouldn't stand the strain of blu tak or masking tape, I elected to have a softer demarcation. These models are pretty small and thus there ain't a lot of room to play with when wielding the airbrush but once it's weathered up, which will help to blend the colours, it will look OK I think.
Thanks for looking.

Re: Shaun's Cold War Builds
Cheers boys. I've painted up all of the wheels and have mounted the main road wheels to both chassis. I didn't really think the work was worth a progress pic so I'll wait until I have at least attached the tracks before my next photos.

Re: Shaun's Cold War Builds
The tracks are now on the German version. Initially I found the link and length construction to be a total PITA as I struggled with the individual links that fit around the drive sprockets and idler wheels. After calming down, I abandoned the use of liquid glue and elected to use Revell Contacta, which gave greater strength and a longer working time. Suddenly and without shame, I changed my mind and found L&L to be a sound idea as the whole lot went together quite easily
In the under the skin shot below you can see that I elected not to use the full upper run of track as it can't be seen and I wanted some bits for the spares box and to make up spare track links, which photos show are mounted at the front of the hull but which neither kit provides. Tut, tut, Revell.
To give you an idea of how the finished model will look I have plonked the upper hull onto the chassis for the next two shots. The track paint needs touching up and holding the model by the chassis will make this easier and more importantly will avoid me getting any fingerprints on the upper hull paintwork, as is my want from time to time
I will paint the tracks on the Dutch version in situ as the paint on this one hindered gluing, as it does and the resulting mess buggered up most of the paint in any event
Thanks for looking.

Re: Shaun's Cold War Builds
Superb work Shaun and I thoroughly approve of leaving out the unseen bits of track....not that I'd do anything like that of course

Re: Shaun's Cold War Builds
Many thanks for your kind comments boys. I think that the spare track bits, with a bit of effort, could be made to masquerade for spare links on other types in this small scale. Apart from needing spare links for these two, it seems a shame to waste potential fodder for the spares box (I am very short of 1/72 or 1/76 vehicle spares) when the upper run can't be seen unless the model is flipped over. It might be the case on the Dutch version, which has full length skirts, that I don't use the upper run of track at all.
