Mav's Cold War Builds
Hey folks!
I have decided to post one thread with all my builds for the Cold War SIG in for all shows I plan on visiting.
I'll start with the MiG-31 Foxhound which I started last year.
I put on the Burners and finished the all over grey paint work.
Finally she returns to an all over grey from black which was applied back in August!
More to come.
C&c welcome as always.

It is an impressive model and it's going to look great on the display table.

Re: Mav's Cold War Production Line.
More has been done on the Foxhound.
The wheel bays have been painted along with all dark grey areas, nose cone and Burners.
Next up are the 2 black areas on the nose and then onto weathering.
Here is a pic of her as she is now:

Re: Mav's Cold War Production Line.
Glad you like her guys, yeah Daz the Halfords stuff is really nice and leaves a very nice finish.
Tonight I managed to do quite a lot of work on the huge MiG-31 Foxhound.
The black areas on the top and bottom of the nose(assuming they are anti glare and the bottom is to confuse enemy pilots).
Added the nose pitot tube, all other surface lumps and antenna.
The gear legs have been given their first coat of silver and the wheels have been 75% painted.
I glued the weapons pilons in place too so that they can be weathered with the rest of the build.
A light cote of Klear has been brushed on to prepare the paint work for the weathering.
I did go looking at hobbycraft for anything that could be used for weathering but couldn't find anything that looked usable to me so I'm going to attempt a panel wash with some watered down black paint and go from there.
If anyone has any tips on using watered down black paint for weathering please feel free to either leave a comment or pm me.
Here is were she is so far:

Re: Mav's Cold War Production Line.
Artsts pastel chalks ground down and mixed with water can be used for weathering and are easy to clean off if you go too far. Best done after decalling though and then sealed with a coat of matt varnish afterwards. And an easy method of picking out panel lines is to use a fine propelling pencil to fill them in.

Agree with Dazzled about using a fine pencil, and if you use thinned paint or pastel chalk dust add a small amount of washing up liquid to allow it to run along panel lines
Best wishes

Thanks lads.
I think I'm going to be using tamiya black with some water and a tiny bit of washing us liquid.
Daz would Decalling first still be the best option?

If I go down the weathering route Mav then I'll decal first, otherwise it looks like someone went along after and only cleaned all the markings on the airframe

Re: Mav's Cold War Production Line.
I'd decal first on most occasions then seal the decals with Klear, or something similar, to protect them while weathering.

Re: Mav's Cold War Production Line.
As promised the Decals have been applied.
I'm only using a Max of 10 decals as the ones supplied in the kit are very fragile.
I have a plan to make one of each MiG with the number of each plane on the side so here she is:
