So Guys,

I've got an SU-27 and a Mig-27 to build for the display, but I've no know how when it comes to Russian paint colours.

So I thought I'd start a thread where you guys in the know could help me out and share some pointers/links etc. for others to use as a ref too?

Akan do a whole range of acrylic paint sets for Russian/Soviet aircraft.

The paints are pretty good too.

I agree with Chris that Akan paints offer a very good range of specialist Eastern bloc colours although you can improvise with other ranges. For my East German Mig-29 I used Tamiya acrylics exclusively to recreate a 5 colour camouflage scheme.

I've just ordered a pot of Akan interior blue/green and some of their thinners - I let you know how I get on.

Are their paints water or solvent based like Tamiya?

I'm reasonably sure that they are water based Stuart. I only have one pot of the interior blue/green in stock that I bought at SMW and I haven't tried it yet but IIRC the dealer told me that I could use water to thin it.

Stuart, I've sprayed these using Tamiya thinners with no issues.

Hi Stu. Bit late answering this but I've been a little distracted lately. Akan paints are water based http://www.coastalcraftmodelsuk.com/akan_paints.php so water is the logical thing to thin them but, as Shane points out, there are plenty of people who use IPA. I've used both but edge towards water now for two reasons. First, it's less toxic and second, it's free
