The Mighty Hood in 1931
I'm going to tackle the Trumpeter 1/700 kit of HMS Hood in 1931 guise.
I have a laser cut wooden deck and a small photoetch fret to go with it.

Re: The Mighty Hood in 1931
As you can see, there are a lot of parts!.
Full hull or waterline options.
Two spotter planes on a transparent sprue. And there are decals for the roundels. Yikes!
A moderate amount of PE bits. There's another fret of railings not shown here.
I'm hoping that the wooden deck, which is a very thin veneer which goes over the plastic, will simplify the painting a little.
This is probably the biggest project I've ever tackled, so we'll see how far we get during the GB.

That would involve a new workbench, new display cabinet and possibly a new living room. Might have to pass on that one.PaulBradley wrote:Nice choice, Andrew!

And it retails at three hundred quid.

Re: The Mighty Hood in 1931
This is the laser-cut wooden deck, which I hope is going to enhance the model considerably.
I should be able to paint the deck fittings first, then stick the self adhesive veneer onto the deck pieces. Hopefully this will mean I get good colour demarcation between fittings and deck, something I always find tricky to do.
There is also some very nice anchor chain provided, so I will probably sand off the moulded-on version.
The anchor chain was often painted white. That may be tricky!
The main hull needs slightly modifying to be correct for the 1931 version.
There are some hull extensions near the bow which were wartime additions for degaussing equipment for magnetic mine countermeasures. I've marked these in red, ready for the chop

Nice wooden deck, as for a white anchor chain, maybe a pin through the last link at each end, attach to a board, and lightly spray matt white.

Good choice. I built her when she first came out. If you haven't chosen, Sovereign Hobbies, who took over the White Ensign Colourcoats, has AP507A Admiralty Dark Grey (RN 01) that would be perfect for her. I use White Ensign for all my naval and most other military subjects. They are really good.
She is in the middle, right behind the Tamiya HMS Hood and in front of the IHP G3 Battlecruiser.
On second thoughts, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place!

I don't use enamels Chuck, so I'm going with Vallejo Model Colour 816, Luftwaffe Uniform WW2 Grey, to represent AP507A. I just picked up that and hull red, and mahagony (for the boats) at the model shop yesterday.

What an amazing array of ships! Holy cow! Do I see Agincourt up in the left corner too? Whose Invincible or Indefatigable is that? Very jealous.

But think about it, plan big, and make space for the Bismarck also -- I mean can you resist the two of them, on opposite walls, facing each other down, 1/200 Swordfish hanging from the ceiling ....AndrewR wrote:That would involve a new workbench, new display cabinet and possibly a new living room. I have primed the hull and the main deck components.
Unfortunately, the new pot of Vallejo Model Colour to match the hull colour has turned into grey cream cheese and will need to be replaced.

Re: The Mighty Hood in 1931
It turned out that all five bottles in stock of the Vallejo paint were coagulated. Fortunately, we managed to find an acceptable Vallejo Air substitute - Grey Blue.
So the hull and main decks got a blast of that this morning.
Then I tried fitting some of the wood veneer deck. Sharp blade to cut it out, but less nerve-wracking than I expected.
More bits are now painted, so I can add a bit of superstructure and box in the main decks. The decks look excellent, far better than I could do with paint.

The wood decks look brilliant.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Yes, I am well chuffed. They look great and make painting the deck fittings a doddle.splash wrote:The wood decks look brilliant.
