HMS Tiger, Frog 1/415

Post by PaulBradley »

Photos to follow, but I'll be building the ancient Frog 1/415 HMS Tiger, with the White Ensign PE set. As I haven't built a shp for about 30 years - the Airfix Fearless in 1982, I believe - this should be interesting...!

The WE PE set replaces a bunch of overly-heavy detail, undetailed and incorrectly detailed parts. Not all that surprising, considering the kit dates from 1961! Aside from adding/replacing detail, I'll also need to remove the scale 2 foot thick armour belt(!), and square off the stern, as it is too curved. I'll be waterlining it and adding it to a sea base.

A useful reference, though a little short on close up photos:

I'll probably be relying on web photos for most of the detail stuff.

Nice choice, is she getting a flight deck and hanger?

I have the Airfix book with instructions on how to convert her if you are interested.

Thanks anyway, Alan, but I prefer her classic look to the abomination that was the 'Command Cruiser...'

My first ship was HMS Dido and we sailed to Australia and back alongside the Tiger, I recall watching her fire her rapid fire 3in guns at a rushton target and her 6in guns at a surface target it was quite impressive.

I fully agree with you about her final looks, the hanger and flight deck were not aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but it did give the fleet the capacity to take the Seaking to sea with its improved ASW capabilities.

Cool story, Alan!

If you don't already have it, may I recommend British Carrier Strike Fleet by David Hobbs? A thoroughly good read, and Cdr Hobbs is most uncomplimentary about the Command Cruiser concept and the way Their Lordships handled the whole process - far too much time and money invested in far too much ship for far too little capability, at a time when the crews were far too big for a contracting service - basically, the RN would have been far better off starting from scratch!

Nevertheless, as built and in their early service, these were impressive ships.

Got this one in storage, courtesy of an old school chum, along with the Battle class destroyer. Didn't know it was a FROG kit till a few years ago, as I was unaware of the NOVO re-issues. Will be interesting seeing it built up from the box, as mine was already built and I did a few repairs, scratchbuilt mast etc.....

I shan't be building it from the box - I have PE and will be making some corrections. ;-) I believe there was a build at the old UAMF forums when we did our Frog Display at Telford.

Further research indicates that the armor belt was pretty prominent, so rather than removing it, I'll just sand it down somewhat. I'll still need to square off the stern though - I need to figure out the best way to do that.

I started today by glueing together and cleaning up the main superstructures, fore and aft. The front, bridge, structure is supposed to look like this:

But looks like this in the kit:

Ugh. I am trying to decide on whether I should persevere with sanding and shaping, or just skin it with 5 thou plasticard - it's a quite complicated collection of angles, even there are no curves. I cannot leave it as is, as the bridge section is a focal point of any ship model.

The aft structure is not a lot better, but it isn't really a focal point.

(BTW, the 'D' and 'L' stand for Door and Ladder, where PE replaces kit 'detail')

I decided skinning was the way to go, but I'll have to do it in stages.

Meanwhile, the aft section gained doors:
